Texas A&M jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but it was not enough, as Kansas scored six runs in the final four innings to lift the Jayhawks to a 6-2 win Saturday night at Hoglund Ballpark.
With the loss, the Aggies dropped to 25-29-1 overall and 6-19-1 in Big 12 play. Kansas improved to 37-12 and 12-14.
Texas A&M took the early lead with one run in the second. Ryan Hill led off the inning with a double and Spencer Jackson reached first base on a catcher?™s interference call. Jose Salazar executed a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, and a Craig Stinson groundout to shortstop drove in Hill for the first run of the game.
The Aggies struck again in the third to take a 2-0 lead. Aggie second baseman Parker Dalton led off with a ground ball single to left field. John Infante moved Dalton to second with a sacrifice bunt. Dalton stole third and then scored on a throwing error by KU catcher Dylan Parzyk.
Aggie starting pitcher Kyle Nicholson made quick work of innings three, four, and five, facing one over the minimum throughout the stretch. He was able to get three groundouts in the third, struck out the side in the fourth, and got two groundouts and a fly ball in the fifth.
The Jayhawks got their bats going in the sixth when Gus Milner hit a two-out double down the left field line, followed by a John Allman walk. Erik Morrison hit an infield single into the hole between third and shortstop, and a throwing error scored Milner, moved Allman to third and Morrison to second. Brock Simpson walked to load the bases with two outs before Ryne Price was hit by a pitch to force Allman in and tie the game at two.
Kansas took the lead by scoring two runs in the seventh. The inning began with Hart Hering fanned Matt Baty to start the inning, but three consecutive walks loaded the bases. An RBI single to right by Allman and a wild pitch accounted for the two runs in the frame.
The eighth inning added two more insurance runs for the Jayhawks to secure the victory on an RBI double by Baty and a Ritchie Price RBI single.
Hering (1-2) took the loss for the Aggies while making his 31st appearance, a new single season record. For the Jayhawks, Paul Smyth (4-1) grabbed the win and Don Czyz got his second save of the weekend.
The Aggies conclude their season Sunday at Hoglund Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
