No. 28 Texas A&M scored five runs in the sixth and reliever Scott Migl threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings Sunday afternoon to lead the Aggies past Texas-Pan American, 6-3, at Olsen Field.
The win was the sixth in a row for Texas A&M, improving them to 7-1. UTPA dropped to 4-7.
?I think this good start is important from a confidence standpoint,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?We are going to be tested as we go and the stakes will continue to rise, but to be 7-1 right now is important because of all of the new players we have.?
A&M started the scoring in the bottom of the second with a run off UTPA starting pitcher Alex Guajardo. Darby Brown singled to start the inning, moved to third on a single by Luke Anders and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Brian Ruggiano.
UTPA answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third off A&M starter David Newmann. Roly Gonzalez reached on a one-out walk, stole second and moved to third when the throw from catcher Craig Stinson went into center field. Osiel Flores then followed with an RBI single, stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch by Newmann.
The Broncs added another run in the fifth when Flores and Patrick Brooks connected with back-to-back two-out doubles to make the score 3-1 and chase Newmann from the game.
Newmann lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He fanned five and walked three.
Guajardo held the Aggies to one run until the sixth. Kyle Colligan double to start the inning and Darby Brown was hit by a pitch. Stinson then ripped a double into the right center gap to score two runs and tie the game at three.
Ray Silva replaced Guajardo with Stinson on second and no outs and after a pair of strikeouts and a walk, back-to-back doubles by Ben Feltner and Blake Stouffer regained the lead for A&M, 6-3.
Migl (1-0) faced the minimum 10 hitters in his outing, allowing only a single in the sixth while striking out two.
Guajardo (0-1) shouldered the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in five-plus innings of work.
Gary Campfield struck out two and walked one in a scoreless ninth to earn his second save of the weekend.
Stouffer had three hits, while Feltner, Brown and Stinson each had two.
The Aggies return to action on Tuesday against Texas-Arlington. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Olsen Field.
