The No. 19 Texas A&M men?™s tennis team shut out No. 63 Old Dominion, 4-0, in front of 419 fans on Thursday in a match that was moved indoors to the City of Bryan Indoor Tennis Courts due to inclement weather.
The Aggies (5-4) seized the early momentum by winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 lines. The tandem of Conor Pollock and Chris Chirico gave A&M the lead with a 9-8 (7-0 in the tiebreaker) win over ODU?™s Tobias Fanselow and Rodrigo Souza at No. 2. With the Aggies down a service break at the No. 3 line, A&M's No. 1 doubles team of Austin Krajicek and Wil Spencer rallied from a 0-30 deficit in the 14th game to serve out the match and grab a 8-6 win over ODU?™s Aleksandr Seleznev and Eidy Igarashi.
?It was a hard fought match,? Denton said. ?(ODU) came out with a lot of energy. It was important to seize the momentum in doubles. With the faster conditions indoors it was automatically going to be closer. We were fortunate to win two of the three and gain the momentum early.
?I don?™t consider Austin and Wil freshmen anymore. They are strong mentally, and they have stepped up and accepted the challenge of playing high-level tennis. It shows their character and how good of tennis players they are.?
Once in singles, Krajicek quickly gave the Aggies a 2-0 advantage with an efficient 6-4, 6-3 win over Igarashi at No. 2, but the Aggies and Monarchs split the first two sets on the other two courts. Spencer was the first to prevail with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win over Fanselow at No. 3, and Pollock clinched the match with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Seleznev at No. 1.
The Aggies return to action with an 11:30 home dual match against TCU on Saturday, March 8 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
