LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior Marcus Lunt won his third consecutive singles match, but it wasn't enough to carry the No. 13-ranked Texas A&M men's tennis team in a 6-1 loss to No. 33 Louisville Sunday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
The Cardinals (11-1) have now won six out of their last seven matches, while the Aggies (3-4) dropped their second-straight indoor dual match on the road next to a 4-3 decision at No. 25 Notre Dame on Friday night.
Lunt, a right-hander from San Antonio, Texas, won his second-set tiebreaker to get past Louisville's Robert Hall, 6-3, 7-6 (6), at No. 5 singles to improve to 15-8 overall on the season and 5-2 in dual match play. Three remaining singles matches at the No. 2 through No. 4 lines would go down-to-the-wire, but it would be the Cardinals who would claim the third set in their upset bid of the visiting Aggies.
A&M looked to claim the doubles point in back-to-back weekend matches, but the sixth-ranked brother duo of Austen Childs and Simon Childs defeated senior Conor Pollock (San Antonio, Texas) and sophomore Wil Spencer (Ponce de Leon, Fla.) picked up their second doubles victory in three days with an 8-6 result against Hall and Viktor Maksimcuk at No. 3.
"Louisville handled the conditions much better than we did today," Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. "We have lost a couple of close matches this year. We cannot seem to get the right points at the right time. We went 0-7 in three-set matches this weekend. We are going to have to do better than that to be successful. In close matches, you have the opportunity to win. We weren't able to finish those matches successfully today."
Up next, A&M prepares for another tough two-match road swing through the Pacific Northwest. The Aggies will travel and compete at No. 29 Boise State (7-5) on Friday, March 6 at 2 p.m. (CT) in Boise, Idaho, and No. 41 Washington (8-3) on Sunday, March 8 at 2 p.m. (CT) in Seattle, Wash.
