COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Brodie Greene smashed two home runs and Barret Loux threw six strong innings to lead No. 15 Texas A&M to an 8-2 win over Dallas Baptist Saturday afternoon before 4,100 fans on Military Appreciation Day at Olsen Field.
Greene's first career multi-homer game highlighted a 14-hit attack for the Aggies (31-16), who took the series with the victory and have won 10 of their last 12. The Patriots fell to 32-13.
In his second longest outing of the year, Loux held the high-powered DBU offense to four hits over his six innings of work, giving up just one run and striking out three while not issuing a free pass.
The Aggies gave Loux all the run support he would need in the third, putting up four runs off DBU starter Chris McMullen. With runners at the corners and one out, Brooks Raley beat out a potential double-play ball to third to drive home David Alleman with the game's first run. Luke Anders then stepped to the plate and smashed the first pitch he saw over the fence in center to put A&M up 3-0.
Following a Kyle Colligan double off the top of the fence in left center, Caleb Shofner singled deep in the hole at short. The long throw over by Ryan Goins got away from the first baseman, allowing Colligan to beat a throw from first home for the Aggies' fourth run.
Greene hit his first home run of the afternoon off McMullen in the fifth, a leadoff shot that gave A&M a 5-0 lead.
After DBU scratched single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to pull within three, Greene would deliver another leadoff long ball. This one, his ninth of the year, bounced off the video board in left field to start the seventh. Later in the inning, Joe Patterson lined a two-out RBI single to center to bump the lead to 7-2.
A&M added an insurance run in the eighth on a suicide squeeze by Greene that brought home Scott Arthur with the game's final run.
Greene led the way offensively, finishing the day 3-for-4 with the two home runs and three RBIs. Anders, Colligan and Shofner had two hits apiece.
Loux (3-1) scattered four hits on the afternoon, allowing one run while fanning three. He did not walk a batter. Alex Wilson picked up his second save of the season, throwing the final three innings and giving up four hits and a run while picking up three strikeouts.
McMullen (6-3) lasted 4 2/3 and gave up eight hits, five runs (four earned) and two walks while striking out one.
Texas A&M returns to action on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. when the Aggies host Sam Houston State. The game marks the return of Mark Johnson, the winningest coach in school history, to Olsen Field. Tickets are still available for the game and can be purchased online at aggieathletics.com or at the gate.
