AUSTIN, Texas - True freshman Ross Hales tossed a complete-game, three-hit shutout on Saturday afternoon to lead No. 14 Texas A&M to a 3-0 win over No. 7 Texas before 7,384 fans at UFCU Disch-Falk Field and a national television audience.
Hales allowed four baserunners on the day. He gave up hits in the first, fifth and ninth innings, and one batter reached on a wild pitch after striking out. Hales, who allowed just one Longhorn into scoring position, went to a three-ball count on a lone UT hitter--Tant Shepherd in the eighth--and got him to ground into a double play.
The victory marked the Aggies' first shutout win over Texas since 1979, and improved their record to 33-17 and 14-9 in Big 12 play. The Longhorns fell to 35-12-1 and 16-9-1 and saw a six-game win streak snapped.
Following a two-out single by Michael Torres in the first, Hales sat down the next 12 Texas batters in a row, allowing just one ball to leave the infield and A&M to build a lead on Texas starter Cole Green.
Kyle Colligan opened the scoring in the top of the fourth, drilling a 1-1 offering from Green over the left-center field fence for his team-leading 12th home run of the year.
A&M tacked on two more in the fifth to extend the lead to three. David Alleman drew a lead walk, and Brodie Greene lined a single back through the box to plate both to make the score 3-0.
The `Horns never threatened and got their only runner in scoring position in the fifth when Brandon Loy singled to right center with two outs and moved to second on a fielding error. Hales then struck out Shepherd to get back in the dugout.
Green (4-2) suffered the loss. He lasted 4.2 innings and gave up five hits, three runs (three earned) and three walks while striking out three.
The series concludes on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. Sophomore Barret Loux (3-1, 4.11 ERA) will face Texas freshman Taylor Jungmann (5-3, 1.72). The game will be televised by FOX College Sports and will be available nationally on DirecTV Ch. 615. Check local listings for up-to-date TV information.

POSTGAME QUOTES
HEAD COACH Rob Childress: "We talked about (bouncing back) this morning. Not a lot of people gave us a chance after last night's emotional loss, and getting up early, getting on the bus at 7:30 and heading over here and playing. Ross Hales answered the bell. He hasn't pitched like a freshman in the last five weeks, and today was no different. It was an incredible performance, on the road, without much sleep, in this humidity...to get a complete game shutout out of him was remarkable."
(on Hales' effectiveness) "I feel like he was able to establish the fastball to his glove side, and that allowed him to go soft away. He was able to do that two, three and four times through the lineup. It was just an incredible, efficient performance, when we needed it most."
(on Hales pitching to the field) "It's a much different field without the Astroturf. It plays slower and comes down to the little things, throwing strikes and being good at the routine defensively. Today was a perfect example of that. they've played a lot of those here like that this year, and it's just a big win."
(on Greene's hit) "It was huge. Coming off Gonzo's hit and run, we got runners at second and third, and for him to come up with a big hit is what we needed most."
(on the team bouncing back) "One game is not going to define who we are, it's the journey. And we won't finish that until the end of the season. The way we bounced back today, though, was impressive."
FRESHMAN P Ross Hales: "Today I came out there feeling pretty good. I used all my pitches. Coach Childress did a great job of mixing things up out there. Gonzo did a great job behind the plate blocking balls in the dirt. Texas is a bunting, running, small-ball team. That's how they play. Getting the leadoff hitter out is the most important thing you need to do."
