COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M women's basketball head coach Gary Blair and associate head coach Vic Schaefer were both recently honored for their service, leadership, impact, and active involvement within the local Bryan-College Station community by several area clubs and organizations.
Blair received the "Citizen of the Year Award" from the local Lions Club at the Brazos Center. Known as one of the most active and involved coaches in the community, Blair is a frequent and charismatic speaker to numerous civic and student organizations throughout the year. He annually hosts the Gary Blair Celebrity Golf Classic which benefits Special Olympics Texas and the Blair's Kids Club program during each basketball season.
"I am very grateful for the award, but I am also very humbled," Blair said. "There are so many people in our community who are devoting much more of their time to give back. I feel behind in matching what the community has already given back to me, our coaching staff, our players and to our women's basketball program."
Schaefer, meanwhile, was selected as this year's honoree for the Hope Pregnancy Center of Brazos Valley "Coaches of Character" series. Each year, in conjunction with their annual golf classic, Hope honors a coach of the Brazos Valley who exhibits the Christian values that Hope works to communicate to the women and men seeking their services.
"Vic Schaefer is well-known for providing sound counsel and advice to the coaching staff and players that make up the Texas A&M women's basketball program," said Tracy Frank, Executive Director of Hope Pregnancy Center which is a faith-based, non-profit organization providing a safe and confidential refuge for those in crisis. "Hope values sound counsel and factual information. We are pleased to honor Coach Schaefer in this way."
The golf tournament will be held on Monday, October 12 at the Pebble Creek Country Club in College Station with early registration scheduled for 11:30 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The entry fee is $175 per player. "I am humbled and honored to be selected by The Hope Pregnancy Center as this year's honoree in their "Coaches of Character" series," Schaefer said. "What a tremendous organization that serves our community in so many different ways. I look forward to our relationship in the months and years to come."
Schaefer, a Class of '84 graduate of Texas A&M, is a dedicated father, husband and coach. He and his family, which includes his wife, Holly, and twins, Blair and Logan, are active members of Brazos Fellowship Church.
