Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago - Texas A&M incoming frosh Wayne Davis captured the 110-meter hurdle title at the Pan American Junior Championships with a record time of 13.08 seconds over the 39-inch barriers at Hasley Crawford Field on Friday evening.
The effort by Davis breaks the national high school record of 13.30 set by Chris Nelloms in 1990 as well as the 12.9 hand-time set by Renaldo Nehemiah over yards back in 1977, which converts to 13.14 seconds.
With a legal wind of 2.0 in the final, Davis claimed gold over South Carolina's Booker Nunley, who clocked 13.32 for silver. Nunley also earned silver at the 2008 World Juniors.
Davis bettered the Pan Am Junior meet record of 13.46 set over 39 inch hurdles by Johnny Dutch in 2007. Dayron Robles of Cuba, the 2008 Olympic champion and current world record holder, set a Pan Am Junior meet record of 13.46 during his victory in 2005 over 42-inch hurdles.
In the prelims of the 110 hurdles, Davis broke the World Junior best for the event over 39-inch barriers as his 13.19 (with 1.5 wind) topped the previous best of 13.23 established by Artur Nogo of Poland in 2006. Davis then lowered the mark to 13.08 in the final.
The recognized World Junior record, set over 42-inch hurdles U.S. collegians contest, is 13.12 by 2004 Olympic gold medalist Lui Ziang, who set the mark in 2002 in Lausanne.
Davis becomes the 10th American to win this event since the Pan American Juniors began in 1980.
