BRYAN, Texas - Sophomore Emily Williams earned MVP honors in fences to highlight the Texas A&M equestrian team's 8-4 win over SMU Sunday afternoon in the home opener at the Brazos County Expo Complex.
Both the fences and flat squads won four of six rides in the hunter-seat only show to push A&M's record to 2-0 on the year and run the Aggies' home show win streak to 25. SMU, meanwhile, fell to 0-5.
In just the third varsity ride of her career, Williams (Woodbine, Md.) scored 89 points in defeating the Mustangs' Ramsay Hanson. It marked the best score by an Aggie this season. Joining Williams with wins over fences were senior Brooke Coleman and sophomores Kori Pickett and Kelsi Shevlin.
On the flat, junior Lia Chafee led the way with an 86-point ride in a win over SMU's Danielle Gersh. Juniors Maggie Earle, Hannah Soibelman and Elizabeth Solch each added victories to round out the scoring.
The Aggie hunter seat squad's effort was one of its strongest in recent competition, with the 12 riders averaging a score of just under 82. Eight of the 12 A&M riders topped 80 points as the Aggies outscored SMU, 978-862.
Texas A&M returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 30 when the Aggies host rival Oklahoma State at the Expo Complex. Show time will be determined once a kick time for the Texas Tech football game at Kyle Field has been announced.
