COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M pounded out 14 hits and used a pair of big innings to pick up a 13-6 win over Seton Hall in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Olsen Field.
The Aggies (2-0) scored four in both the first and sixth innings and production throughout the lineup, as four players had at least two hits. The Pirates fell to 0-2 with the loss. Game two is set to begin at approximately 6 p.m.
A&M jumped on SHU starter Frank Morris quickly, tagging the freshman for four runs in the first inning.
After reaching on an error to begin the frame, Brodie Greene sacrifice fly. The next batter, Andrew Collazo, delivered the team's first home run of the new season--a line-drive shot down the line in left--that put A&M up 2-0. RBI singles later in the inning by Kenny Jackson and Kevin Gonzalez would double the lead.
Texas A&M would score twice more in the fourth to make the score 6-0 before Seton Hall finally got to starter Ross Stripling in the top of the fifth.
The Pirates got a lead double from Chase Gray and a bloop single to left by Chris Fontenelli to begin the inning. After a stellar diving catch in center by Greene got the Aggies the first out and a groundout moved both runners into scoring position, Michael Rogers chopped a ball high off the plate to score the first run of the afternoon for the visitors. A.J. Rusbarsky followed by lining a ball just inside the bag at third to plate two more and make the score 6-3.
A&M would blow open the game, however, in the sixth with four more to push the Aggies' lead to 10-3. Joe Patterson delivered the big blow with a bases-loaded, one-out single to center to score a pair. RBI singles by Caleb Shofner and pinch-hitter Matt Juengel would drive in the inning's other runs.
A sac fly by Collazo and a two-run blast by Shofner in the eighth would make the score 13-3. SHU would tack on three ninth-inning runs to close the scoring.
Greene continued his torrid start to the year, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two triples and three runs scored. Shofner added a three-hit, three-RBI night while Collazo drove in three runs.
Seton Hall was led by a 3-for-5 effort by Michael Rogers and two RBIs apiece by Rusbarsky and Chris Spagnuolo.
Stripling (1-0) picked up the win for the Aggies, going five-plus innings and allowing seven hits, three runs and a walk while punching out three. Denny Clement, Estevan Uriegas and Michael Wacha combined for four innings of relief.
