TULSA, Okla. - Freshman Alberto Bautista (McAllen, Texas) led the No. 17-ranked Texas A&M men's tennis team to a 4-3 road victory over No. 31 Tulsa on Sunday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Bautista, who raised his singles record to a team-leading 5-1 on the season, defeated Tulsa's Grant Ive in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, at the No. 5 line to clinch the match victory for the Aggies (4-2). A&M won four of the six singles matches after dropping the doubles point to the Golden Hurricane (6-3).
Junior All-American Austin Krajicek (Brandon, Fla.) tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-3, 6-0 result over Tulsa's top player Philip Stephens to improve to an undefeated 5-0 in dual match play. He was followed by sophomore Alexis Klegou (Dunkerque, France) who put away Alastair Barnes in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 3 line and sophomore Colin Hoover (Victoria, Texas) who topped Tristan Jackson, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 6.
"It was a good team win," Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. "We handled the road adversity well. Austin Krajicek played well again and it was good to see Alexis Klegou contribute in singles. Alberto Bautista was the MVP of the match. He was down 5-2 in the third set and fought his way back to clinch the match. Colin Hoover also did a great job down 5-2 in the first set and down five set points, but came back to win. That was a very important momentum swing for us, considering we lost the doubles point and we were fighting an uphill battle. It was a great result for our team. It was a much-needed road win."
The Aggies will have the next week off prior to hosting Wisconsin and Laredo Community College in a doubleheader scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 21 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center at noon and 6 p.m. (CT) respectively.
