FORT WORTH - Jason Coats went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead No. 10 TCU to a 6-1 win over Texas A&M Tuesday evening before a record 4,375 fans at Lupton Stadium.
The Horned Frogs used a pair of errors to push across two of their first three runs and then got a big hit by Coats in the fifth to give them some breathing room. Tyler Lockwood provided 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief to secure the victory.
With the loss, the Aggies fell to 20-11-1, while TCU improved to 24-7 and snapped a nine-game losing streak to Texas A&M.
The Frogs staked themselves to an early lead in the first off starter Nick Fleece, scoring on a two-out RBI double by Matt Curry and an infield error to grab a 2-0 advantage.
With runners at the corners in the TCU fourth, Aggie catcher Caleb Shofner and into left field. The miscue allowed Taylor Featherston to trot home with the game's third run.
Joaquin Hinojosa put the Aggies on the board with a leadoff home run to left in the fifth, his first long ball of the season.
Coats would make the score 5-1 in the fifth with a two-run double into the left field corner, then add another RBI with a two-out, two-strike single to center in the seventh.
Hinojosa had a solid night at the plate for the Aggies, going 2-for-4 with the homer and a stolen base. Shofner added a pair of hits. For TCU, Bryan Holaday joined Coats with two knocks. On the night, the Frogs out-hit A&M, 10-8.
"We're going to keep getting after it, get better every single day and keep swinging the bats," A&M coach Rob Childress said. "I thought we had a good approach tonight and hit a lot of balls hard."
Fleece (1-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing three hits and one earned run over two innings of work. He did not walk a batter and struck out one. The Aggies used six pitchers on the night and got strong outings from several.
"We just wanted to give some guys some work tonight," Childress said. "If someone showed me they had a hot hand, we were going to ride them. I thought Shane Minks was pretty good and (Clayton) Ehlert was really good tonight."
Lockwood (4-2) earned the victory in relief, giving up three hits over 4 2/3 shutout innings.
Texas A&M returns to action on Friday when the Aggies head to Austin to face third-ranked Texas in the first of a three-game series. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Junior Barret Loux (5-2, 2.09) is scheduled to take the mound and will face Longhorn sophomore Taylor Jungmann (3-1, 2.88). The series then shifts to Olsen Field for the final two contests on Saturday and Sunday.
"Focus isn't an issue with our guys," Childress said. "They were focused against Baylor and focused again tonight. This was a big game for us. These guys show up to get after it every day. It's just a matter of getting timely hits, playing routine defense and making big pitches to get off the field. Every team goes through a stretch like this in the course of a given year, and ours is right now. We're going to get through this and we're going to be fine."
