COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Brodie Greene went 4-for-5 with four RBIs to lead 23rd-ranked Texas A&M to a 14-5 win over UTSA Tuesday evening before 3,068 fans at Olsen Field.
Greene delivered the knockout blow in the decisive sixth inning--one which saw the Aggies score seven times--with a long three-run homer deep into Aggie Alley behind left field.
The win pushed Texas A&M to 19-8-1 on the season, while UTSA, which scored all of its runs on solo homers, fell to 12-15.
"We had a big inning in the sixth, but other than that it was a very good game," A&M coach Rob Childress said. "We played very good defense and (Clayton) Ehlert gave us a good start. Our bullpen was outstanding. And, it was good to see us get after it offensively."
The teams traded runs in the first, as UTSA right fielder Tyler Carpenter led off the game and finished a 10-pitch at-bat with a solo home run to left field, and Aggie DH Joe Patterson delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom half to tie the game.
A&M scored three in the third to take the lead and chase Roadrunner starter Justin Martinez in the process. Caleb Shofner would add an RBI single later in the inning and Gregg Alcazar would follow one batter later with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to center to make the score 4-1.
Ryan Dalton and Jeff Taliaferro would add solo blasts in the UTSA half of the fifth, cutting the A&M lead to 4-3.
The score would be the same heading into the sixth, where three consecutive singles to start the frame would extend the Aggie advantage to 5-3. After two more runs scored on an error and a wild pitch, Greene blasted his three-run shot to make the score 10-3. The Aggies added another on a double play to complete the rally.
Greene and Hinojosa tacked on RBI singles in a three-run seventh to push the lead to 14-3.
Joaquin Hinojosa and Matt Juengel joined Greene with multi-hit outings, both totaling two knocks. The Aggies pounded out 14 hits on the night.
Shane Minks (1-0) picked up the victory in relief. He allowed two hits and walked a pair over 1 2/3 shutout innings. Minks highlighted a strong outing by the A&M bullpen, where three relievers combined to allow just three hits and two unearned runs over 4 2/3 innings. Aggie starter Clayton Ehlert lasted 4 1/3 innings and gave up four hits, three runs and a walk while fanning five.
Martinez (0-1) took the loss, giving up five hits, four runs and a walk over 2 1/3 innings. He struck out three batters on the night.
Texas A&M returns to action and Big 12 play on Friday when the Aggies host Baylor in the first of a three-game, split-site series. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. The series then moves to Waco for games on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon.
