AUSTIN - Amid nine victories and eight runner-up finishes by Texas A&M during Saturday's Texas Invitational, the Aggies had one double winner in senior sprinter Porscha Lucas.
Lucas won the 100 and 200 combo, setting a collegiate leading time for 2010 of 22.85 seconds in the 200. She won the 100 in 11.37 seconds.
Teammates Ashika Charan, who posted an impressive 23.78 for second in her heat and 11th overall.
A&M junior Melvin Echard enjoyed a breakout performance in the long jump, an event he has only taken up while in college. On his first jump at Myers Stadium Echard flew out to a wind-aided distance of 26-0.25 (7.93) for the win.
"I didn't quite know what 7.93 was when I jumped it," Echard noted. "I was excited to see 7.93 on the board, but I probably didn't show a lot of emotion because I didn't quite know what had happened. I knew I felt good coming off the board and with my execution of the jump.
"In high school I never had a long jump. When I got to college I took one jump my freshman year. Then I had a couple more in my sophomore season. This year was just about really taking it seriously, knowing that this could possibly be one of my events. It was exciting to see the fruits of my labor."
The effort bettered Echard's previous best of 24-10.5 which he set at Penn Relays last weekend. Echard only had one more attempt measured, a windy 25-4 (7.72) in round four. He passed the final two rounds to conserve energy for the 110 hurdles later in the meet.
Teammate Julian Reid turned in his first long jump performance of the outdoor season, placing second to Echard with a 24-9.75 (7.56). Marquise Goodwin of Texas finished third with a wind-aided 24-9.25 (7.55) while Oklahoma's Will Claye placed sixth with a windy 23-11.5 (7.30).
"I was really glad to see Julian back in competition," Echard said. "It was exciting to compete against a field of this caliber and excel. I'm really excited to see what this will hold for me in the future."
A&M also produced a 1-2 finish in the women's long jump and men's triple jump.
Vashti Thomas turned in a windy 20-10.5 (6.35) for the long jump victory while Sasha-Kay Mattias reached a distance of 20-9.75 (6.34) as runner-up. Tiffany Peters placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 42-0 (12.80).
The mark for Matthias makes her the No. 4 performer at A&M and equals the 6th performance. The wind-legal best of 20-8.5 (6.31) for Thomas moves her to the No. 6 performance.
Thomas later placed second in the 100 hurdles with a 13.22 while teammates Donique' Flemings (13.90) and Daphne Fitzpatrick (14.42) finished eighth and ninth.
