LINCOLN, Neb. - Tom Lemke tossed a complete-game shutout to lead Nebraska to a 1-0 win over Texas A&M in the series finale Sunday before 2,902 fans at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.
Lemke just barely out-pitched Aggie senior Clayton Ehlert, who had his second complete game of the season and third of his career. The only run he allowed was a two-out homer by Cade Thompson to right center in the second, which turned out to be the difference in the game.
Despite the loss, the Aggies (25-17-1, 9-11-1 Big 12) took the series after claiming victories on Friday (6-1) and Saturday (10-5). The Huskers, meanwhile, improved to 20-24 and 7-14.
"Clayton pitched his heart out," A&M coach Rob Childress said. "The bottom line is when we have runners in scoring position we have to drive them in. We didn't do that today, and we're walking out of here with a sweep if we do that. We pitched well and played good defense, but we just didn't finish the week. We've got to be able to finish and have great weeks from here on out."
The teams combined to go hitless with runners on base (0-for-18) and runners in scoring position (0-for-9). Joe Patterson had three of the Aggies' five hits on the day, while Thompson had two of Nebraska's four.
Lemke's complete game was the second of his career as he improved to 5-5. He gave up five hits and two walks while fanning nine.
Ehlert (2-5) went the distance for the second time this season, allowing only four hits and the lone run on the afternoon. He allowed a career-high five walks (two intentional) and fanned three.
Texas A&M returns to action Tuesday when the Aggies make the short drive to Huntsville to face Sam Houston State. First pitch at Don Sanders Stadium is set for 6:30 p.m.
