MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico - During the Central American and Caribbean Games, with the track and field portion being held in the Estadio Centro Americano de Mayaguez, Texas A&M sprinter Tabarie Henry claimed a silver medal in the 400-meter final on Monday evening.
Running a time of 45.07 seconds produced a season best time for Henry, who challenged Costa Rica's Nery Benes for the victory after slipping when he came out of the starting blocks. Henry was in fifth place as the field reached the homestretch and powered his way to second place over the final 100 meters of the race.
Benes won in a personal best of 44.84 while Jamaica's Allodin Fothergill posted a 45.24 for bronze.
"I'm proud of the race I was able to run, despite slipping in the blocks," stated Henry, who will anchor the U.S. Virgin Islands 4 x 100 relay on Thursday, July 28.
Henry, an All-American with the Aggies in 2010, anchored A&M to NCAA titles in the 4 x 400 relay during the indoor and outdoor national meets. In winning the NCAA outdoor 4 x 400, the Aggies successfully defended its 2009 national team championship in June by one point.
Texas A&M grad Clora Williams, the 2006 NCAA Outdoor champion, raced to fourth place in the women's 400 final for her native Jamaica with a time of 53.04 seconds. Christine Amertil of Bahamas won the race in 52.16.
In Sunday's final for the 100 meters Texas A&M grad Allison George, representing Grenada, placed sixth with a time of 11.62 after posting an 11.45 to win a semifinal heat earlier in the day.
Also on Sunday, during the semifinals, Henry won his heat in 45.40 while another A&M sprinter, Demetrius Pinder of the Bahamas, finished fourth at 46.29 in the third heat and just missed advancing to the final on time, by 0.06 of a second.
Williams clocked 52.68 in the semifinal of the women's 400 to place second in her heat. Williams and Pinder will have 4 x 400 relay duty for their respective countries on Friday, July 30.
