COLLEGE STATION, Texas-- The 10th-ranked Texas A&M Aggie men's tennis team swept the season opening match against Louisiana Lafayette, 7-0, on a sun splashed Saturday afternoon at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center before a crowd of 593.
The doubles point turned at the #1 line as Aggie senior Alexey Grigorov (Moscow, Russia) and freshman Junior Ore (Gaithersburg, MD) broke the serve of Yanick Mandl (Switzerland) and Brandon Farine (League City, TX) with the match tied at four and went on to win the decisive match, 8-5.
The first match in the books was at the #2 position as A&M's Alberto Bautista (McAllen, TX) and Colin Hoover (Victoria, TX) defeated Ted Nilsson (Sweden) and Carlin Murray (Philadelphia, PA), 8-2.
The lone match win for the Ragin Cajuns came at the #3 line as Louisiana Lafayette's Oscar Pachon (Bogota, Columbia) and Carl Alberton (Australia) won, 8-4, over Aggies' Jeff Dadamo (Tampa, FL) andAustin Klores (Franklin, TX).
The Aggies swept singles with Grigorov dispensing of Farine, 6-4, 6-2 on the #3 line. Bautista defeated Nilsson, 6-0, 6-1 at the #4 position and Dadamo defeated Murray, 6-4, 6-2 at the top spot.
The final three matches standing saw Ore defeat Pachon, 6-3, 6-2 at the #5 slot and at the #6 position, Aggie junior John Lewis rallied from a 3-6 loss in the opening set to come back and win the second set, 6-4, and then won the tiebreaker, 10-4.
The last match in play was at the #2 position where Hoover defeated Mandl, 6-2, 7-5.
"Junior (Ore) made a very athletic move with a perfect lob to help break serve in the #1 doubles match and that was the turning point in that match," Aggie head coach Steve Denton said. "Hoover and Bautista played very aggressive and really has some good chemistry going right now. We were able to play a lot of guys and get some good work in today. Overall, it was good to get the cob webs out and the guys responded well. We have a lot of work to do with a very good Mississippi State team coming to town next week."
The Aggies improve to 1-0 and the Ragin Cajuns fall to 0-2 on the year.
The Aggies also played the #13-ranked Division II Abilene Christian in an exhibition match later on Saturday and won the match, 5-2.
ACU won the doubles point with victories at the #3 and #2 lines.
