NORMAN, Okla. - Sophomore Katerina Ruzickova and the 11th-ranked Texas A&M women's golf team finished tied for third in the final round of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.
From Ostrava, Czech Republic, Ruzickova hovered in and out of the top 10 in the first two rounds and turned in another solid score with an even-par 72 in windy conditions Tuesday to climb eight spots on the leaderboard for her best finish of the season. Ruzickova's 1-over 217 (71-74-72) was her best score and her second top 10 finish this fall.
Coming off the lowest round of the tournament yesterday, the Aggies finished at 883 (288-283-312), five strokes behind host and tournament winner Oklahoma (878). Texas Tech placed second with 879 and Florida State matched A&M's score of 883 to tie for third. New Mexico rounded out the top 5 of the 17-team field at 887.
"It's always good to finish in the top 5, but we're obviously disappointed with the way we performed today," Aggie head coach Trelle McCombs said. "We looked like we played defensively from the start. We made a few mistakes in the beginning and thought we had to force things to happen. The good thing was that we had already put ourselves in contention. We're headed in the right direction, now we iron things out and learn how to win."
In addition to Ruzickova, junior Mary Michael Maggio garnered her second top 10 finish of the fall after posting a final round 77 on Tuesday. She finished eighth with 219 (+3) scoring 73-69-77 for the three-day event.
Junior Sarah Beth Davis also had her best finish of the season and tied for 12th with a 6-over 222 (74-69-79). Sophomore Natalie Reeves tied for 22nd with 225 carding rounds of 70-71-84. Freshman Patricia Garcia cracked the lineup for the first time this season. She tied for 62nd overall counting 74-75-85 for a 234 in Norman.
The Aggies return to the course to wrap up the fall October 30-November 1, at the Alamo Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
