ORE, BAUTISTA AND ANGUS ALL ADVANCE AT ITA ALL-AMERICAN
Oct 03, 2011 | Men's Tennis
Ore (pronounced OAR-a), from Gaithersburg, Maryland, was the first Aggie in action on Monday and defeated Big 12 foe Dane Webb from Oklahoma, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, in first round action.
“Junior continues to make tremendous strides in his tennis game,” Aggie head coach Steve Denton said. “He made a quick adjustment from high school to college and contributed a great deal to our success last year in winning the Big 12 Championship and finishing the year ranked No. 10 in the country. He had an excellent summer including one of the top upsets at Nationals at Kalamazoo (MI) by beating the 2011 French Open Junior Champion.”
Ore defeated the overall No. 3 seed Bjorn Fratangelo (6-2, 6-4) in the fourth round of singles action this past summer at the USTA National Championships held in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Junior Alberto Bautista, from McAllen, Texas, also advanced to the second round in Tulsa with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Zach White from Mississippi State.
Niall Angus, a junior from London, England, was the third Aggie to advance as he defeated Jenson Turner from Pepperdine, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
“I was really pleased with the fight and determination all three of our guys showed by winning the three-set battles,” Denton said. “We may not be as experienced this year as we were last, but I am really encouraged by the fight and grit we are exhibiting thus far in the fall.”
In other first round action, senior Colin Hoover, from Victoria, Texas, faced the No. 5 seed Nikola Bubnic from San Diego and dropped a 6-2, 7-6 (7) decision.
True freshman Jeremy Efferding, from Boca Raton, Florida, reached the qualifying round by winning four matches in the pre-qualifying rounds but dropped a 6-3, 6-1 match to Yannick Maden from Clemson.
Tuesday (Oct. 4) Ore will face Roy Kalmanovich from Illinois while Angus draws another Big 12 opponent in Vitor Manzini from Texas Tech. Bautista faces Juan Melian Puigventos from Georgia Tech in second round singles action.
Doubles play will begin on Tuesday and Ore and Bautista are the No. 10 seed and received a bye into the second round as well as Hoover and senior Alexis Klegou, from Dunkerque, France. Angus and Efferding will face Joey Burkhardt and William Parker from North Carolina in first round doubles play and a pair of redshirt freshmen, Jackson Withrow from Omaha, Nebraska, and Jordan Szabo from Bayswater, Victoria, Australia, will face Jose Carlos-Gutierrez-Crowley and Dan Mamalat from Marquette.
