MADISON, WI - Junior John Lewis came up big for the 18th-ranked Texas A&M men's tennis team as the Aggies defeated Wisconsin, 5-2, in the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin, on Sunday afternoon.
Alexis Klegou (Dunkerque, France), who has played in the middle of the Aggie lineup this spring, was not feeling well. Lewis (Birmingham, AL) stepped in at the No. 6 singles and he teamed with Niall Angus (London, England) at the No. 3 doubles.
"I thought John Lewis was the star of the match today," Aggie head coach Steve Denton said. "With Klegou under the weather, we slid a couple of guys up in the lineup and John played at No. 6 and at No. 3 doubles with Niall Angus. John played very well."
"It is never easy on the road, especially against a team that loves to play indoors," Denton explained. "Then to have the adversity of losing Klegou, the guys really responded and I am proud of the way they played. We are now 3-3 indoors this spring and playing with more confidence."
After Wisconsin won the doubles point, senior Alexey Grigorov (Moscow, Russia) made quick work of Billy Bertha, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3 singles to even the match at one.
Alberto Bautista (McAllen, TX) took his match at the No. 5 line, 6-2, 7-5 before Lewis won at No. 6, defeating Alex Robles, 6-2, 7-5 to give A&M a 3-1 advantage.
The Badgers would pull within 3-2 as Marek Michalicka defeated Austin Krajicek (Brandon, FL) at No. 1, 6-3, 6-3.
Senior All-American Jeff Dadamo (Tampa, FL) would clinch the match at the No. 2 position, beating Ricardo Martin, 7-5, 6-3. The key point in that match was the first set as Martin was serving for the first set ahead, 5-4, and Dadamo broke his serve and finished off the first set, 7-5. Dadamo cruised in the second set, 6-3.
The final match of the evening was at the No. 4 line where Colin Hoover (Victoria, TX) battled Rodney Carey for a three-set victory, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
The win improves A&M's overall record to 11-3 on the season, while Wisconsin falls to 6-6. The Aggies will host two Top 5 squads this week as the No. 3-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes come to College Station for a 6 p.m. match on Thursday followed by No. 4-ranked Illinois Fighting Illini on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
