HOUSTON - Despite a solid outing by sophomore lefty Brandon Parrent, the No. 5 Texas A&M baseball team dropped a 2-0 contest to No. 22 Rice Tuesday night at Reckling Park.
"I felt like we had a good first six or seven at bats of the game and were able to hit some balls hard (off Simms)," Texas A&M head coach Rob Childress said. "Once we didn't score, he retired 21 batters in a row with a single sandwiched in the middle and was really throwing his breaking ball well. We couldn't lay off or make an adjustment to that pitch. Give him credit, he threw great."
The loss dropped the Aggies' overall record to 24-9 while the Owls improved to 24-13.
Rice fired the game's opening salvo with an unearned run in the home half of the second as Owl catcher Geoff Parrott drove in a score with a run-scoring ground out.
Parrent (1-3) was the hard-luck loser despite tossing a career-high six innings and yielding just the one unearned run. The Aggie right-hander from Flower Mound, Texas, limited Rice to just four hits while striking out three and walking one.
Parrent's outstanding outing was matched by Rice starter John Simms who set career highs with 7.2 innings pitched and 11 strikeouts while keeping the Aggies blanked on the scoreboard.
The Owls extended the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the eighth with a one-out RBI single by right fielder Keenan Cook that looped over a drawn-in infield.
Texas A&M attempted to rally in the top of the ninth as right fielder Tyler Naquin singled to lead off the inning and extend his career-long hitting streak to nine games. Unfortunately for the Aggies, during the next at bat freshman Krey Bratsen flared a ball that looked ticketed for the gap but was reeled in by leaping Owl second baseman Michael Ratterree who doubled Naquin off first.
The Aggies return to action this weekend when they face Baylor in a three-game Big 12 series. Friday's game will be at Baylor Ballpark in Waco before the scene shifts to Olsen Field for Saturday and Sunday's contests.
