COLLEGE STATION Texas - A ninth-inning blown save and a three-run Bearkat 12th inning proved to be the undoing of the No. 6 Texas A&M baseball team Tuesday night at Olsen Field as Sam Houston State defeated the Aggies 8-5.
The loss dropped the Big 12-leading Aggies to 29-12 on the year while Sam Houston State improved to 28-15. Prior to the game, SHSU head coach and former Texas A&M skipper Mark Johnson was honored for all his accomplishments in Aggieland. The all-time coaching wins leader in A&M baseball history, Johnson has announced plans to retire following the 2011 season.
Johnson's Bearkats raced out to a 3-0 lead in the contest as they plated a run in the first inning on a solo home run by designated hitter Chris Andreas. Two more SHSU runs came in the top of the second off Texas A&M starter Brandon Parrent, who lasted just two innings in the contest and was one of eight Aggie pitchers to appear in the game.
During the bottom of the fourth, the Aggies roared back to tie the game at 3-3 by taking advantage of four walks in the inning. Adam Smith and Gregg Alcazar each collected an RBI during the frame which did not feature an A&M base hit.
Freshman Krey Bratsen gave Texas A&M its first lead of the night in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single and came around to score later in the frame on a Jacob House hit, making the score 5-3 Aggies.
Senior closer Joaquin Hinojosa could not close the door in the ninth, giving up a leadoff single that was followed by Andreas' second long ball of the evening.
After scoreless 10th and 11th innings, Sam Houston State pushed across three runs in the top of the 12th against a trio of A&M pitchers. Sophomore lefty Dylan Mendoza (2-1) took the loss on the mound for the Aggies.
SHSU's Matt Shelton (6-0) notched his team-leading sixth win of the year by throwing two scoreless frames.
Sophomore outfielder Tyler Naquin highlighted a trio of Aggies who notched multi-hit games by doubling twice to extend his career-best hitting streak to 17 games. His second two-bagger was a long fly ball in the bottom of the ninth inning that hit the top of the wall in right center, coming just inches short of being a walk-off home run
Texas A&M baseball hits the road this weekend as it travels to Columbia, Mo., to battle Missouri in a three-game Big 12 series.
