MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Aggies' bid for a 10th consecutive victory and a sweep of Kansas State fell short on Sunday as the No. 5 Texas A&M baseball team lost to the Wildcats 9-4 at Tointon Family Stadium.
The Wildcats (17-11, 2-7 Big 12) were able to solve the Aggie pitching staff which entered the week leading the nation in ERA and helped Texas A&M take the first two games of the series. The eight runs and 13 hits against were both season-highs for an Aggie opponent.
The loss snapped the Aggies' nine-game winning streak, which entering play on Sunday stood as the longest current streak in the nation. It also dropped Texas A&M's overall record to 22-6, while the Aggies remain in first place in the Big 12 standings with a 7-2 league record, sharing the top spot with Texas. The 7-2 start to conference play ties the Aggies' best start to a Big 12 season through nine games with the 1999 team which also started 7-2.
The Aggies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with a pair of runs against KSU starter Kayvon Bahramzadeh. Outfielders Krey Bratsen and Tyler Naquin notched back-to-back, one-out singles followed by a walk issued to designated hitter Matt Juengel that loaded the bases.
Junior first baseman Jacob House collected his team-leading 24th RBI with a run-scoring ground out to plate the first run by the Aggies. A second A&M run came in on a passed ball during the next at bat, giving the visitors the early advantage.
Kansas State did not wait long to answer the Aggies' early runs, scoring two in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 2-2. After retiring the first two men of the inning, Aggie starter Ross Stripling (5-2) was taken deep by KSU first baseman Jason King. Designated hitter Wade Hinkle tripled in the next at bat as his fly ball was almost hauled in by a sprinting Bratsen in center field. Hinkle tied the game in the next at bat by scoring on a double off the wall in right.
An unfortunate break allowed KSU to score two runs in the bottom of the third inning and take a 4-2 lead. After a swing and a miss on a Stripling curveball looked to put the finishing touches on a 1-2-3 inning for the Aggies, the ball bounced away from A&M catcher Kevin Gonzalez. The pitch in the dirt allowed the runner to reach and the inning to continue. Following the strikeout wild pitch, KSU's Nick Martini drove in a pair with a double to the wall in left center.
A RBI single by Bratsen brought the Aggies to within 4-3 in the top of the third inning and the rookie centerfielder tied the game at 4-4 with a RBI single in Aggie fifth.
The Wildcats broke the game open with a four-run fifth that featured two runs on wild pitches and a two-run homer by Jared King.
The long ball chased Stripling and closed the book on the Aggie right-hander, who finished allowing a career-high eight earned runs against his ledger on nine hits. He struck out six batters but walked one and threw three wild pitched as his ERA rose from 0.76 to 2.47.
A leadoff hit batter came around to score in the bottom of the seventh off A&M reliever Brandon Parrent to make the score 9-4 Wildcats.
Jared Moore (1-0) picked up the win in relief for Kansas State, throwing 1.1 innings out of the Wildcat bullpen.
Texas A&M baseball is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Houston in a 6:35 p.m. contest at Olsen Field.
