COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Despite the first home run of freshman second baseman Charlie Curl's Aggie career, the No. 5 Texas A&M baseball team suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Houston on Tuesday at Olsen Field.
The loss drops the Aggies' overall record to 22-7, while Houston won its fourth straight game and improved to 16-14 on the year.
The Cougars drove in the game's first run in the top of the second off Texas A&M starter Estevan Uriegas on a ground out by second baseman Ryan Still.
Uriegas, making his second career start, tossed 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on three this while walking two and notching a pair of strikeouts.
UH made it 2-0 in the top of the fourth, plating its second run on RBI single by left fielder Joel Ansley.
Replacing Uriegas on the mound, Aggie sophomore Kyle Martin turned in one of his best performances since donning the maroon and white to keep the Aggies within striking distance. The Austin, Texas, native threw a career-high 3.1 innings, limiting the Cougars to just two hits.
With two outs in the home fifth, Curl finally got the Aggies on the scoreboard when he connected on an offering from UH starter Codey Morehouse and drove the pitch an estimated 393 feet over the left field wall.
Still trailing by a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, A&M needed a clutch hit to even the game and got the big knock from sophomore right fielder Tyler Naquin. Following a walk to left fielder Brandon Wood, Naquin came up with two outs and drove a pitch to the wall in right center for a game-tying RBI double.
The tie would not last long; however, as UH shortstop Chase Jensen delivered a two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth that glanced off the glove a diving Andrew Collazo at third base.
Sophomore lefty Brandon Parrent (0-1) took the loss for the Aggies while UH reliever Jordan Mannisto (2-1) tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless ball to earn the win.
Texas A&M baseball is back in action this weekend when it heads to Lubbock, Texas, to battle Big 12-rival Texas Tech in a three-game series.
