COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Fourth-ranked Texas rallied from a 2-0 deficit Thursday night at Olsen Field as the Longhorns defeated the No. 11 Texas A&M baseball team 4-2 in front of 7,082 fans during the opener of three-game series.
"We made some mistakes," Texas A&M head coach Rob Childress said. "They made some mistakes too, but they were able to take full advantage of ours ... We made some great plays early to get off the field. Stilson picks off a guy, Gonzo (Kevin Gonzalez) back picks a guy at first and Matt Juengel uses the hidden ball trick to get us off the field, so we had some breaks early but we didn't capitalize on them. You're not going to have many opportunities against (Taylor) Jungmann."
With the win, Texas (39-12) pulled into a tie with the Aggies (37-17) atop the Big 12 standings, sharing identical 18-7 league records. The series resumes Friday with a 6 p.m. contest at Austin's UFCU Disch-Faulk Field that can be seen on Fox College Sports. Fox Sports Southwest will also carry the game in the network's Northern region markets and on FOX Sports Plus in the Southern region.
The contest was billed as one of the nation's marquee pitching match-ups between a pair of aces in Texas' Taylor Jungmann and Texas A&M's John Stilson. In the end it was Jungmann who came out on top, as the Longhorn ace went the distance for his fourth complete game of the season, scattering two runs on seven hits to improve his record to 12-0.
Stilson (5-2) was tagged with the loss after surrendering three runs (two earned) on six hits during 6.1 innings of work. The A&M right-hander struck out three on the night, but surrendered a career-high seven walks.
"Jungmann was exactly what we expected," Childress added. "He commanded his fastball very well and threw his breaking ball when he needed to; he's a great pitcher. John didn't have great command but I thought he pitched a lot on heart and wiggled through some innings there early to have a competitive outing."
After retiring the Horns in order during the top of the first, Stilson had to work out of his first jam of the night in the second frame. He walked three during the inning but was the benefactor of a pair pickoffs to escape unscathed.
The Aggies jumped out to an early lead in the contest as they got an RBI single by junior third baseman Matt Juengel in the third to take the initial 1-0 advantage.
Sophomore outfielder Tyler Naquin extended the lead to 2-0 with a run-scoring knock in the bottom of the fifth after the Aggies used the hidden ball trick to escape a jam in the visitor's half of the inning.
Stilson ran into trouble again in the top of the seventh as he allowed back-to-back singles to begin the inning. Following a strikeout and a wild pitch that allowed the first Longhorn run of the night to score, consecutive walks to the top two hitters in the Texas order signaled the end of Stilson's night as he was replaced on the mound by Kyle Martin.
An error in the field opened the door for two more Texas runs to come across as the Longhorns claimed their first lead of the night at 3-2. The one-run lead would be all that Jungmann would need as he retired 14 of the final 15 batters he faced.
The Longhorns plated an insurance run in the top of the ninth to give the game its final score and snap the Aggies' six-game winning streak.
