COLLEGE STATION, Texas - A four-run top of the 10th inning proved to be the margin of victory in a wild contest Friday night at Olsen Field as Dallas Baptist defeated the No. 9 Texas A&M baseball team by a score of 14-10.
Sophomore right fielder Tyler Naquin was the biggest offensive standout for the Aggies (31-16) in the contest as the Spring, Texas, native went 3-for-5 at the plate with five RBI. His performance raised his season batting average to .408 and extended his career-best hitting streak to 23 games as he continues to climb the list in the A&M record book for the most consecutive games with hit.
Junior designated hitter Matt Juengel and sophomore outfielder Brandon Wood also notched multi-hit games for the Aggies as each recorded a pair of knocks in the contest.
Dallas Baptist (32-14) pounded out 23 hits on the night and was led by right fielder Jason Krizan, who went 4-for-7 with four doubles to raise his NCAA-leading total to 34 for the year.
After neither team could push across a run during the first three innings, the game took a wildly different turn in the top of the fourth when the Patriots scored twice. Junior third baseman Adam Smith plated the Aggies' first run of the contest with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.
DBU scored three times in the top of the fifth to open a 5-1 advantage, but a two-run double by Naquin when the Aggies came to bat in the frame cut the visitor's advantage to 5-3.
Two more Patriot runs came in to score during their half of the sixth inning but the Aggies rallied once more to plate four runs and knot the score at 7-7. The inning's biggest hit again came from Naquin, who drove in two with a single through the left side.
During the top of the seventh, DBU again went on top by scoring a run to go up 8-7, but RBI from Naquin and freshman centerfielder Krey Bratsen in the home half of the frame gave Texas A&M its first lead of the night at 9-8.
The Patriots scored a run in the top of the eighth and another tally in the top of the ninth to appear poised to close out the Aggies in the bottom of the ninth. However, a dropped two-out pop up on the infield allowed the tying run to score and forced extra innings.
Unfortunately for the home fans, the 10th inning was all Patriots as they pushed across four runs against Kyle Martin (1-1). One night after he collected his first career save, Martin took the loss for the Aggies, who used six pitchers in the contest.
DBU's Chris Haney (4-2) pitched the final two innings on the mound for the Patriots to pick up the victory.
The series will be decided Saturday during the rubber contest between the two schools, which is slated for a 2:05 p.m. first pitch. Texas A&M will send junior RHP Ross Stripling (9-2, 2.19 ERA) to the hill to face DBU righty Jordan Staples (5-1, 4.46 ERA).
