No. 14 Softball Falls to Pacific, 2-0

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The Aggies hit five singles as the 14th-ranked Texas A&M softball team (9-6) fell to Pacific (6-6) on the Aggies' final day of the Cathedral City Classic.
The Aggies finished the weekend with a 1-4 tournament record after falling to No. 1 Florida, New Mexico and No. 5 Washington, Pacific, and defeating BYU (RV) in extra innings.
"We had lots of opportunities to score and hit the ball on the screws a bunch," head coach Jo Evans said. "It just seemed like nothing fell our way. The game is all about adjustments at the plate and timely hitting. Pacific came up and made some really big plays when they needed to make them. It's disappointing for us because I feel one-hundred percent better about our effort and our attitude."
The Tigers jumped on the first opportunity they got when a double and a sacrifice bunt put a runner on third base. A two-out error sent the runner home for the 1-0 lead in the top of the third.
Pacific took advantage of a runner in scoring position again in the fifth inning when an RBI single sent the runner in as the Tigers took a 2-0 lead.
Singles by junior Meagan May in the second, sophomores Amber Garza and Emily Albus in the third, and senior Natalie Villarreal in the fourth helped runners get as far as third through four innings, but the Aggies couldn't capitalize on scoring chances.
In the bottom of the fifth with A&M trailing by two, Garza led off with a walk and was pushed to second on a bunt single by freshman Brittany Clopton. A sacrifice bunt by Albus sent both runners into scoring position before junior Brittany Walker drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases with one out and chase the starting pitcher from the circle. Villarreal ripped a pitch through the right side, but the Pacific first baseman snagged it and tagged Walker out at first for the double play to end the inning with Aggies on second and third.
Junior Sydney Shannon walked in the sixth and was replaced by sophomore Cassie Tysarczyk in the lineup, but the right fielder was left stranded on the third out. Shannon drew two walks on the day and hit a sacrifice bunt to go 0-for-0.
Garza led off in the bottom of the seventh with a walk and was tossed out at second on a fielder's choice that put Clopton, the centerfielder, on first. The third baseman was 1-for-1 on the game with two walks and a single. Clopton was unable to advance, however, and the Aggies took their fourth loss of the weekend.
Dumezich (4-4) threw seven complete innings for the loss, giving up two earned runs on five hits while walking two and fanning seven. Pacific starter Dani Bonnet (2-1) earned the win, striking out one and giving up five hits. Tiger reliever Tori Shepard earned her third save of the season after throwing 2 2/3 innings.
The Aggies return to the Lone Star State this week to face Sam Houston State in Huntsville at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. That game will be broadcast live on 95.1-3 The Zone HD. The Aggies will then host Houston, Nebraska and Texas State in the Texas A&M Invitational this coming weekend. To learn more about Texas A&M softball, log on to AggieAthletics.com.
