Dunlap Posts Runner-Up Finish in Desert

Dunlap (68-72-74) matched the best finish ever by an Aggie at the event and, despite a tough finish, placed two strokes back of medalist Blake Biddle of UNLV (212, -4).
"Ty Dunlap showed is a great player with an incredible future," head coach J.T. Higgins said. "More importantly, he is a class young man. He handled himself with dignity and composure and I have already been contacted by several of the tournament hosts who were impressed by his composure and character in the face of adversity. He will bounce back better and stronger than ever. I'm so proud of him, he's a credit to our university."
As a team, A&M (288-292-305=885) wrapped the weekend in fourth place at 21-over, finishing ahead of three top-10 teams.
"The back nine did not go how we planned and all the big numbers hurt, but I could not be more proud of these guys," Higgins said. "The conditions were as adverse as you could possibly imagine and we fought so hard. Everyone is really disappointed right now with the finish but after the dust settles it will be hard to miss the positives. These guys can play any course and compete with anyone. We will learn from this and be better for it."
Host and 11th-ranked UNLV carded the best round of the day and rallied to a one-shot victory with an 8-over 872. No. 10 California (873, +9) finished second, followed by No. 5 UCLA (+18), the Aggies, No. 12 Stanford (+24), No. 1 Texas (+27), No. 16 Duke (+30) and No. 4 USC (+31). No. 24 Oklahoma State, No. 25 Florida and No. 3 Alabama tied for ninth at 32-over, with TCU (+40), Texas Tech (+45), New Mexico State (+79) and Arizona State (+80) rounding out the field.
Individually for the Aggies, Senior Jordan Russell finished 26th with a 7-over 223 (73-73-77), while junior Cameron Peck was one shot back in 27th with an 8-over 224 (73-73-78). Sophomore Jade Scott (80-74-76=230, +14) finished 52nd, and redshirt freshman Greg Yates (74-76-81=231, +15) finished one shot back in 56th. Senior Geoff Shaw (79-73-79=231), playing as an individual, also placed 56th.
Texas A&M returns to action this weekend when the Aggies participate in the Morris Williams Intercollegiate on Friday and Saturday at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin.
