Women?s Tennis Jack Kramer Invitational Recap
Nov 03, 2014 | Women's Tennis
“In some respects the tournament was something of a disappointment for our group,” A&M head coach Howard Joffe said. “Our singles results were not what we were hoping for, and the rain and delays didn't allow our teams to finish the tournament. From a different perspective, there were some improvements: our doubles team went a combined 4-0 and won each match resoundingly. And in singles, getting more matches, however difficult, is no doubt moving us in the direction of being prepared for our season.”
The doubles team of Saska Gavrilovska and Eva Paalma won three matches to advance to the semifinals, but with the courts being unplayable Sunday morning and return flights booked for the afternoon, the Aggies bowed out of the tournament before the semifinal match was able to be played.
A&M's Rutuja Bhosale and Ines Deheza reached the doubles quarterfinals before withdrawing from the tournament.
In singles, Deheza reached the quarterfinals before falling to 61st-ranked and eventual champion Joana Costa of LSU, 6-1, 6-1. Bhosale had reached the round of 16, where she was defeated by Kaitlin Ray of UCLA, 6-1, 6-1.
Paalma went 1-1 in singles, defeating 59th-ranked Zoe Katz of USC, 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 in the first round but suffering a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 loss to Abby Owens of LSU in the round of 32.
A&M's Mason Strickland fell in the first round to Lisa Fieldsend of North Carolina State and also suffered a first-round loss in the consolation bracket. Gavrilovska, the No. 2 seed in the 64-player singles draw, had a first-round bye and fell in the round of 32 to Joana Nalborska of North Carolina State.
The tournament was the final competition of the fall for Bhosale, Paalma and Strickland.
Gavrilovska received a wildcard entry to the ITA USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, to be played later this week in Flushing, N.Y. In addition Deheza and Rachel Pierson received an automatic berth in the doubles portion of the national tournament by winning the doubles title at the ITA Texas Regional in October.
