
A&M Nominees for McWhorter Post-Graduate Scholarships Announced

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., April 30 – Swimmer Paul-Marc Schweitzer and multi-sport athlete Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship by Texas A&M University.
The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league's top male and female scholar-athletes.
The Southeastern Conference will name the 2014 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship on May 6.
Highlights of Texas A&M's nominees include:
Paul-Marc Schweitzer, Swimming
- Industrial and Systems Engineering major scheduled to graduate in May 2015
- Also pursuing minors in Economics and Mathematics
- Ranked in the top 3 percent in his degree plan (#10 of 355 students) with 3.8 (on a 4.0 scale) overall GPA.
- Earned academic all-conference honors from both the Big 12 and Southeastern Conferences
- Has been first-team College Swim Coach Association of America Scholar All-American past two seasons
- Named Dean's Distinguished Student in Industrial Engineering in 2012, and received the department scholarship in 2012 and 2013, which is awarded to high-achieving students
- Two-time All-American
- School record holder in 200-yard freestyle and ranks as one of most valuable relay swimmers in school history.
- Three-time NCAA qualifier
- Both All-America citations came as part of 800 freestyle relay
- Helped break school record in 800 freestyle relay multiple times during his career
- Ranks in top 10 at A&M in the 100 free, 200 free, 500 free, 100 back, 200 back and 400 IM
Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar, Multi-sports
- International Studies major scheduled for graduation in May 2014
- Member of 2013 SEC Academic Honor Roll
- Named to 2013 NCAS National Academic Momentum Award team
- All-ACC Academic Team selection at Maryland prior to transferring to A&M
- One of the most versatile athletes to play at Texas A&M, competing on NCAA Tournament squads in tennis, soccer and basketball
- A&M's first two-time All-American in tennis and was a two-time all-conference selection
- First tennis player in Big 12 Conference history to receive both Big 12 Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year accolades in the same season
- Became only the second Aggie ever to reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championship in 2012
- Led A&M to an SEC title, its first-ever NCAA Championship match appearance and a National Runner-Up finish in 2013
- Was a school-record No. 5 in the final national singles rankings as a senior
- Set school record with a .820 career winning percentage primarily from the No. 1 flight, following back-to-back 40-plus win seasons in singles
- After tennis career she moved to the pitch where she played 13 games and scored a goal for the A&M soccer team, which won both the SEC regular season and tournament championships and advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament
- In spring, suited up for the basketball squad, providing veteran presence for a team that advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight and tied the best conference record in school history
Each year, the SEC, in conjunction with AT&T, an SEC Corporate Champion sponsor, provides the league's male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients with a $15,000 post-graduate scholarship. The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $7,500 post-graduate scholarship.
The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 14 SEC institutions and are honored at the SEC Spring Meetings in Sandestin, Fla., in late May.
