LAS VEGAS – Texas A&M's Saska Gavrilovska won her singles flight to highlight the Aggies' fall season finale at the Rebel Invite this weekend at UNLV's Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Gavrilovska came from behind to defeat Jessica Failla of USC, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the Flight Two championship match. The junior from Serbia reached the finals by defeating Mimi Fotopoulos of Oklahoma, 6-1, 6-1 in the first round and Sofiko Kadzhaya of TCU, 7-6, 6-0 in the semifinals.
Aggie senior Ines Deheza took third place in the Flight Four of singles. Deheza opened the tournament Friday with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Celine Koets of Idaho but fell, 6-3, 6-1, to eventual champion Ella Tayor of LSU in the semifinals. Deheza then cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 win over Reka Szentes of UNLV in the third-place match.
Aggie freshman Domenica Gonzalez picked up a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Alexis Pereira of TCU in the first round in Flight Three but retired after the second set of the semifinals in which Belen Barcenilla of Idaho dropped the first set, 6-3, but came back to win the second set, 7-5, before Gonzalez retired.
Senior Rachel Pierson also picked up a first-round win for the Aggies as A&M won all four of its first round singles matches. Pierson opened by defeating Ana Batiri of Idaho, 6-1, 6-3, in Flight One. However, Pierson, who has been hampered by an arm injury, was unable to continue and withdrew prior to the semifinal match.
Deheza and Gonzalez also competed together in doubles and suffered an 8-2 setback to Blair Shankle and Elizabeth Profit of Baylor in the first round. They later defeated Rita Bermudez and Belen Barcenilla of Idaho, 8-6, in the consolations.
The Aggies, under the direction of first-year head coach Mark Weaver, open the spring season January 23 as they play host to South Alabama in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
