LIHUE, Hawaii – A pair of Aggies carded top-10 finishes at the Wailua Golf Course on Friday as the Texas A&M men's golf team wrapped up play at the John Burns Intercollegiate in fourth place.
“This is a really solid finish for us and it shows that we're heading in the right direction,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “We need to play this kind of golf the rest of the semester if we want to reach our goals.”
The Aggies (288-293-291=872, +8) finished the event with their highest placing in a tournament this season, while California took home the team title (282-291-279=852, -12). New Mexico (295-283-281=859, -5) and UNLV (287-291-290=868, +4) rounded out the top three teams on the leaderboard.
“I'm happy with the finish, but I think we leaked a little bit of oil coming in that might have moved us up a spot in the final standings,” Higgins added. “Overall, it was a good showing against a good field.”
Junior Adrià Arnaus (70-72-70=212, -4) earned his third career top-10 placing, firing a two-under par 70 Friday to end play with a share of fourth in the individual standings. Senior Greg Yates (71-74-70=215, -1), meanwhile, finished in 10th to card top-10 finish No. 13 for his Aggie career.
“I'm really proud of our upperclassmen and the way they played,” Higgins said. “Greg and Adrià put the team on their shoulders and brought us home. Hopefully, our younger guys can learn from them.”
A trio of freshmen rounded out the Aggies' lineup at the event as Cameron Champ (75-74-76=225, +9) finished in a tie for 43rd, Connor Black (72-73-81=226, +10) in a tie for 49th and Andrew Paysse (78-77-75=230, +14) in 62nd.
Three more Aggies saw competition as individuals. Andrew Lister (77-72-73=222, +6) earned a share of 27th while Jake Goodman (78-73-77=228, +12) and Ben Crancer (80-82-77=239, +23) finished in 56th and 86th, respectively.
Texas A&M men's golf is back in action on March 9-11 at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Master's in Las Vegas, Nev.
