LAS VEGAS – The Texas A&M men's golf team wrapped up play at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters on Wednesday, finishing the event in 13th place.
“We're never going to be happy with a 13th-place finish in any field, no matter how tough it is,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “It goes without saying that we are pretty disappointed in the showing. On the positive side, I was really proud of Andrew Paysse. For a freshman to bounce back from a rough round yesterday and shoot under par today, that was really nice to see. It was also nice to see Ben Crancer put together a solid tournament as well.”
Paysse (73-81-71=225, +9), a rookie from Temple, Texas, carded the Aggies' lowest round on Wednesday by recording four birdies to show a 10-shot improvement from round two and finish in a tie for 66th.
Meanwhile, competing as an individual, Crancer (68-69-78=215, E) completed the tournament with a share of 30th place.
As a team, the Aggies (292-297-292=881, +17) were five shots better during Wednesday's final round than the previous day, shooting a combined four-over par. Fourth-ranked Texas (276-284-278=838, -26) took home team champion honors, while Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Arizona State and UCLA rounded out the top five on the leaderboard.
A pair of A&M golfers finished with a share of 43rd, as senior Greg Yates (74-71-74=219, +3) and junior Adrià Arnaus (69-74-76=219, +3) each ended the event at three-over par.
Freshman Cameron Champ (77-73-72=222, +6) and junior Andrew Lister (76-79-75=230, +14) rounded out the A&M contingency in 57th and 76th, respectively.
“There are some signs of life but we've got to get better at taking care of our business and valuing shots to compete at this level,” Higgins added. “I think that we have the makings of a really solid team. If we can make it to postseason I think we're going to surprise some people. However, we're not going to get there unless we do a better job of cherishing our shots and not giving them away.”
Texas A&M men's golf returns to action March 15-16 when it travels to Naples, Fla., to participate in the Talis Park Challenge.
