HOOVER, Ala.- No. 13 Texas A&M won the 2015 SEC Women's Golf Championship at Greystone Golf & Country Club by 12 strokes over South Carolina with a final score of 851 (-13). It is Texas A&M's first conference title since 2010, and the Aggies' first in the SEC. The Aggies have now won six conference championships in women's golf.
The Aggies' 851 is the second-lowest three-round total in SEC history, and the Aggies 13-under finish is the lowest score, relative to par, in SEC Championship history.
“I am so proud of these girls and how they came through in tough conditions the last three days,” said Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs. “Only playing five holes in the practice round certainly made things interesting. There were holes they didn't see but I asked them to trust me when I told them where to hit it.”
“They did such an amazing job of being a team this week, everyone contributed and gave it their all," added McCombs.
Sophomore Bianca Fabrizio won the individual championship with a score of 207 (-9), finishing two strokes ahead of teammate, freshman Maddie Szeryk, who finished second with a 209 (-7). Fabrizio's 207 ties for the lowest 54-hole score in SEC Championship history.
“Bianca and Maddie were solid this week,” McCombs said. “I can't be more proud of how they stepped up and played their hearts out.”
The Aggies, who had not finished higher than seventh in the SEC Championship prior to this season, used a lineup of one freshman and four sophomores to win a conference championship that featured eight Top 25 teams. Individually, no Texas A&M player had finished higher than 19th in the SEC Championship, until Fabrizio and Szeryk finished 1-2.
The Aggies held off a surging South Carolina squad, ranked second nationally, by shooting a 281 (-7) on the par 72 / 6,308 yard Legacy Course. The Aggies' final-round 281 matches the lowest third round in SEC Championship history, set by Vanderbilt in 2002.
Fabrizio shot a final round 70 (-2) to win the SEC Individual Championship, making her the fifth Aggie to win an individual conference title, and the first since 2006. Fabrizio birdied each of her final three holes to win the individual competition by two strokes over teammate Szeryk. The Treviso, Italy native shot under par in each of the three rounds of the SEC Championship.
Szeryk shot a 69 (-3) to finish second in the tournament, marking the fifth straight tournament she has finished in the Top 10. Andrea Jonama matched Szeryk's effort with a 69 (-3) on Sunday, and finished the tournament with a 225 (+9), in a tie for 36th.
Thanya Pattamakijsakul and Marijosse Navarro tied for 20th in the tournament with a final score of 221 (+5). Pattamakijsakul shot a 73 (+1) to close the tournament on Sunday, while Navarro shot a 76 (+4) in the final 18 holes.
With the conference championship, the Aggies automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships, making their 15th straight appearance, and 24th appearance overall. NCAA play begins on May 7-9 with Regional round play.
