
No. 1 ranked Aggies add five more victories at Stanford Invitational

STANFORD – Shelbi Vaughan claimed another discus title with a throw of 194 feet, 2 inches as No. 1 ranked Texas A&M generated five more victories on the second day of the Stanford Invitational.
In addition to Vaughan, the Aggies swept the 4x100 relays as well as the 200 meters with Deon Lendore and Ashton Purvis. A&M also had the top collegiate finisher in the triple jump with Olabanji Asekun.
Vaughan bettered the Invitational discus field at Stanford by six-plus feet with her third round toss of 194-2 (59.19) after opening her series with a 194-0 (59.13). Summer Pierson placed second with a 187-11 while Stanford's tandem of Rebecca Hammer (182-7) and Valarie Allman (177-6) finished third and fourth.
Earlier in the day Vaughan contested the collegiate division of the hammer, placing eighth with a mark of 166-2 while teammate Carissa van Beek finished ninth with a 161-4.
Lendore ran 21.04 into a headwind (-1.0) to win the men's 200 while Ashton Purvis clocked 23.48 (0.2 wind) to claim the women's 200 title in her home state of California. Aaliyah Brown finished third in the race with Purvis as she ran 23.69. Elijah Morrow ran in the same section with Lendore and placed sixth in 22.06 that placed him 18th overall.
In the sprint relays the Aggie men posted a winning time of 39.69 as they bettered a field that included the Sequoias (40.51), Washington (40.64) and Arkansas (40.66). Meanwhile, the A&M women clocked a 43.94 to top a field which included Notre Dame (45.54), Portland State (45.65), and an Aggie B squad (45.74).
Runner-up efforts by A&M included Asekun in the triple jump with a leap of 49-5 ¾ (15.08) to finish as the top collegian behind the winning distance of 52-6 (16.00) by Marcus Robinson. In the women's collegiate javelin Kristen Clark placed second with a 153-8 (46.85) toss as teammates Krysten Bradley (139-11) and Audrey Malone (138-2) finished fifth and seventh.
A throw of 199-0 (60.66) placed Austin Cook fourth in the Invitational hammer while Jeff Bartlett finished seventh in the Invitational shot put with a mark of 53-4 ½ (16.27). Tying for fifth in the collegiate pole vault were Sara Kathryn Stevens and Emily Gunderson as both cleared 12-0 ½ (3.67).
Hector Hernandez led the Aggie crew in the 800 meters with a 1:48.36 for fourth place in the fastest section. Josh Hernandez ran in section two and placed second at 1:50.35. In the fifth section of the 800 A&M produced a 1-2 finish with Efrain Hernandez (1:50.58) and Gaines Kinsey (1:50.76). In the women's 800, Katie Willard placed sixth in her section with a 2:12.50 while Karina Buerk ran 2:14.12 for fifth place in another section.
