Shamier Little advances to semifinals of 400 hurdles at World Championships

BEIJING, China – Opening round action for Texas A&M sophomore Shamier Little had her placing fourth to earn an automatic advancement to the semifinal round at the Bird's Nest during the Sunday morning session at the IAAF World Championships.
The top four finishers in each of the five heats, plus the next four fastest times advanced to Monday's semifinals, which will be run at 6 a.m. Central time on Monday.
Little posted a time of 56.47 as she stuttered her steps over the last barrier and needed a lean at the finish line to hold off Joanna Linkiewicz of Poland, who finished fifth in 56.51 and didn't advance on time. The last time qualifier was 56.30.
Jamaica's Janieve Russell won the fifth heat that Little competed in with a 55.09 over a 55.33 by Denisa Rosolova of the Czech Republic. Switzerland's Petra Fontanive edged ahead of Little at the finish with a 56.40 for third place.
United States teammate Cassandra Tate posted the top time in the opening round with a 54.27 from lane 2 as she neared her personal best of 54.01.
Kaliese Spencer of Jamaica won the first heat in 55.03 over Sparkle McKnight of Trinidad (55.77). Defending World Champion Zuzana Hejnova of Czech Republic posted a 54.55 to claim heat two over Eilidh Child of Great Britain (54.74). Wenda Nel of South Africa clocked 54.45 behind Tate in the third heat. Denmark's Sara Petersen won heat four in 55.11 over Australia's Lauren Wells (55.65).
Opening rounds of the men's 400 meters had Texas A&M senior Bralon Taplin, who represented Grenada, placing eighth in 46.27 after a strong start to his race. Winner of the heat was David Verburg of the United States in 44.43 with Trinidad's Machel Cedenio runner-up at 44.54.
Action on Sunday afternoon, during the Monday morning session in Beijing, will have Texas A&M junior Shelbi Vaughan competing in the discus. Vaughan is the fourth thrower in group B, which starts at 9:55 p.m. Central time. Throwers will be seeking a mark of 206-8 (63.00) to earn automatic qualification to the final. The top 12 marks from the two groups of 31 throwers will make the final.
