NORMAN, Okla.- The No. 11 Texas A&M women's golf team tied a school record by shooting a final round 274, surging to a second place finish at the Schooner Fall Classic at Belmar Golf Club.
"The girls rose to the challenge today," said Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs. "Our mission today was to go out and play to Play Great."
"I am so proud of how we performed and kept it going," added McCombs. "I'm very excited about this group of ladies and look for them to do some special things this season."
Texas A&M entered the day in fifth place and 11 shots behind tournament leaders Oklahoma State, then shot up the tournament leaderboard, and even briefly led Oklahoma State on Monday. The Cowgirls then pulled away for a seven shot victory.
The Aggies' final round score of -10 is the third-best single round score, relative to par, in school history, and matches the best single round gross score in school history. The Aggies previously shot a 274 at last season's Schooner Fall Classic, when Belmar Golf Club played as a par 70 course.
A&M's current junior class is now responsible for each of the top seven best single-round scores in school history, and 10 of the top 13 single rounds.
All six Aggie golfers shot 3-over or better in the second and final round of the rain-shortened tournament, with four of them matching or setting collegiate bests on Monday.
The Aggies were led by Thanya Pattamakijsakul and Andrea Jonama, who each finished the tournament with a 138 (-4), finishing in a tie for sixth. Pattamakijsakul shot a final round 67 (-4) to post her first career Top 10 finish. Jonama followed up an (-4) on Saturday with an even-par 71 to finish in the Top 10 for the third time in her career. Yupaporn Kawinpakorn of Kansas won the tournament with a 131 (-11).
Bianca Fabrizio fired off five straight birdies from Holes No. 6-10 on the par 71 / 5,901 yard course, helping her to a 67 (-4) on the day, bringing her to even par (142) for the tournament and to a T-16th finish.
Maddie Szeryk shot a 69 (-2), finishing the tournament in a tie for 19th with a 143 (+2). The sophomore moves into a tie for fifth on A&M's career par-or-better rounds list with 24.
Freshman Emily Campbell sunk two birdies on the way to a 74 (+3), finishing in a tie for 48th at 153 (+11). Redshirt freshman Chloe Velasco, playing as an individual, had three birdies, posting a 73 (+3), finishing in a tie for 53rd at 155 (+13).
The Aggies return to action on Sunday, September 27, for the first of three rounds of the prestigious Annika Intercollegiate presented by 3M in Orlando, Florida.
