Catanzariti Falls in ITF Futures Quarterfinals

COLLEGE STATION, Texas –The Texas A&M Men's Tennis team claimed eight wins in Ft. Worth at the 2016 ITA Texas Regional Championships Friday, hosted by TCU at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. In South Texas, junior AJ Catanzariti saw his run come to an end in the ITA Futures Quarterfinals.

Catanzariti tallied five wins in Harlingen, including an impressive 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Julian Lenz, the former All-American at Baylor. The Pittsburgh, Penn. native fell 7-6(2), 6-2 to Benjamin Lock, a 2016 All-American at Florida State.

Catanzariti's teammates had a successful Friday at the 2016 ITA Regional Championship in Fort Worth. In the doubles round of 32, No. 20 Max Lunkin and Arthur Rinderknech topped Paul Domanski and Hunter Holman of Abilene Christian, 8-2, while Aleksandre Bakshi and Hady Habib defeated Daniel Armengol and Jose Hinojasa of Texas-Arlington, 8-7. Seniors Frankie Colunga and James Martell fell 8-4 to Baylor's William Little and Bjoern Peterson. In the round of 16, Lunkin and Rinderknech will face Rodrigo Banzer and John Mee of Texas, while Bakshi and Habib will take on Igoa Cantanhede and Takeru Watanabe of UTSA.

In the singles bracket, Colunga topped Sebastian Langdon of ACU, 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 128, before falling 6-3, 6-0 to Reese Stadler of TCU. In the Round of 64, No. 9 Rinderknech bested Hinojasa 6-2, 6-1, Kevin Lam fell, 6-1, 6-0 to No. 91 John Mee of Texas and Habib defeated Cole Lawson of ACU, 6-0, 6-1. Rounding out the day one singles matches for the Aggies was, Martell over Colin Markes of Texas, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, Bakshi over Nedim Ahmic of Incarnate Word, 6-1, 6-0, and Lunkin defeating Gianni Mancini of host-TCU, 6-2, 6-1. In the Round of 32, Rinderknech will face Leonardo Telles of Texas, Habib will compete against Kevin Bettendroffer of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Martell will oppose Gerardo Lopez Villasenor of TCU, Bakshi will compete with Carlos Di Laura of Texas Tech and Lunkin will play Rodrigo Banzer of Texas.

Singles and doubles championships are scheduled to be played Monday, with the winners advancing to face other regional winners across the country at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 3-6, in Flushing, N.Y.
