No. 1 Texas A&M drops No. 3 Georgia, 13-7, in home opener
Nov 05, 2016 | Equestrian
COLLEGE STATION – The No. 1 Texas A&M equestrian team defeated No. 3 Georgia, 13-7, Saturday in the Aggies' home opener at the Hildebrand Equine Complex.
"We couldn't have started the day any better," head coach Tana McKay said. "Georgia is really solid in all four events and we came away with three wins in four events. That is huge. I feel like the girls are at that spot where they are confident, but they aren't taking anything for granted. They haven't let the ranking get to their head by any means. They are still working hard. You never know what the mindset is at home, because there is so much more to do. There's so many distractions and so many responsibilities that the girls have that you never know if they are in the zone or in the right frame of mind to compete. Obviously they were today. We saw some great rides. I was really impressed with the consistency that we found in all four events."
The Aggies (4-1, 2-1 SEC) got out to a rousing 8-2 lead, sweeping the day's first event, Horsemanship, before taking Equitation over Fences, 3-2.
In Horsemanship, junior Avery Ellis led off with a 75-74 victory over Maddie Anger, before Sarah Orsak defeated Sammie Johnson, 72-70. Senior Rachel Lucht topped Bailey Anderson, 75-68, and junior Bailey Cook scored a 75, bettering Anna Hutlas' 73.5. Senior Kaci Fisher closed out the event with a 76-70.5 win over Graysen Stroud, earning MOP honors.
Sophomore Rebekah Chenelle defeated Emma Mandarino, 82-80, to begin Fences. Junior Alex Desiderio recorded her first win of the season in the event, toppling Meghan Flanagan, 85-84. Junior Kai DeVoglaer was named MOP after scoring a team-best 87, defeating Maddy Darst's 83.
Following intermission, senior Sarah Kate Grider earned the first point in Reining, knocking off Graysen Stroud, 68.5-63.5. Redshirt freshman Ashton Dunkel earned her first-career MOP honor with a 70-69 win over Kyndall Harper.
Desiderio clinched the win for the Aggies with an 87-80 victory over Emma Mandarino in Equitation on the Flat. Chenelle followed suit with an 86-84 triumph over Liza Finsness. Junior Maddie Swem scored the final point, defeating Madison Newman, 72-68.
The Aggies return to action for their final fall meet on Nov. 10 against Delaware State at the Hildebrand Equine Complex. Competition is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., and admission is free.
