Harrington, Show shine as No. 24 Texas A&M sweeps opening day doubleheader
Feb 12, 2016 | Softball
COLLEGE STATION - Sophomore Trinity Harrington and freshman Samantha Show led the 24th-ranked Aggie softball team over No. 7 UCLA, 5-1, and Wichita State, 4-3, Friday at the Aggie Classic.
"I thought they both had great nights," head coach Jo Evans said. "They both threw too many pitches, so I want them to be more efficient, but I thought Trinity fought so hard out there. She really kept her composure. There were a couple of times it looked like she was going to run out of gas. She makes good pitches and I am really pleased with her. Sam was in trouble with walks, but every time she answered the call. She was able to get herself out of jams. It makes all the difference when you can get yourself out of trouble with strikeouts."
Harrington threw a complete game six-hitter against the Bruins giving up only one run with 10 strikeouts. The Aggies (2-0) jumped out to an early lead, plating four runs in the first frame. With runners on second and third, senior Cali Lanphear blasted a two RBI double off the right field wall before sophomore Kristen Cuyos hit a two-run homerun to left field, capping off the inning.
After the Bruins got on the scoreboard in the third inning with a Mysha Sartaka RBI single, freshman Riley Sartain belted her first career homerun in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win for A&M.
Against Wichita State, Show dominated in the circle, striking out 15 hitters and only allowing two hits in eight innings. Sophomore Tori Vidales drove in freshman Keeli Milligan on an RBI single in the first inning giving the Aggies an early advantage, but the Shockers responded with two runs in the top of the third.
Freshman Kaitlyn Alderink evened the game with a RBI double in the bottom of the third, driving in Milligan. After four scoreless innings, the international tiebreaker rule went into effect and the Shockers were able to take a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth.
With Sartain on second base to begin the inning, sophomore Erica Russell moved the Aledo, Texas native to third on a sacrifice bunt before Milligan reached on an infield single. Milligan then stole second before Alderink roped a 1-0 pitch off the centerfield wall driving in both runs for the walk-off double.
The Aggies return to action against Colorado State at 3 p.m. CT Saturday before another matchup with No. 7 UCLA at 5:15 p.m.
