No. 24 Texas A&M splits day two of Aggie Classic
Feb 13, 2016 | Softball
COLLEGE STATION – No. 24 Texas A&M softball split its Saturday doubleheader at the Aggie Classic, defeating Colorado State, 3-0, before falling to No. 7 UCLA, 7-3.
"I was excited against Colorado State because we only allowed one walk on the day and Trinity (Harrington) threw 74 pitches after throwing about 150 pitches yesterday," head coach Jo Evans said. "She didn't throw as hard, but she was effective. She had good movement, and I thought her location was really good.
"UCLA is a good hitting ball club and you knew at some point they were going to start stroking the ball. I thought they did a good job on zeroing on what Sam (Show) was throwing. She wasn't able to throw her off-speed pitches for strikes. The good thing is that this is a good game for Sam to get out there and get her feet wet. I was really proud of her for keeping her composure and working hard out there on the mound for us."
Sophomore Trinity Harrington recorded her second win of the season, giving up only two hits and a strikeout in five and third innings. The Greeley, Colo., native gave up a leadoff walk and an infield single in the top of the first before retiring the next 14 batters. Freshman Samantha Show entered in relief and earned her first career save, holding the Rams hitless with two strikeouts in an inning and two thirds.
Sophomore Tori Vidales gave the Aggies a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, hitting her first homerun of the season to center field. With one on and one out in the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Ashley Walters blasted a two-run homer over the scoreboard in left field.
In the nightcap, UCLA jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, but the Aggies responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Vidales knocked in freshman Keeli Milligan on a sacrifice fly to center field before senior Cali Lanphear roped a one-out double to right field, plating freshman Kaitlyn Alderink.
The Bruins then added four runs in the top of the fifth with three consecutive extra base hits to give UCLA a 7-2 lead. Freshman Riley Sartain began the bottom of the fifth with a double to center and later scored on an UCLA throwing error.
Texas A&M will close out the Aggie Classic at noon Sunday against Wichita State, while Colorado State and UCLA will kick off day three at 10 a.m. CT.
