UCLA Edges Texas A&M in ITA Indoor Quarterfinals
Feb 13, 2016 | Men's Tennis
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 2nd-seeded Texas A&M men's tennis team suffered its first setback of the 2016 season, falling 4-2 to No. 7 UCLA at the Boars Head Club in Charlottesville, Va. Saturday afternoon in the ITA Indoor Team National Championship quarterfinals. With the loss the Aggies fall to 10-1 on the season and will face No. 8 Ohio State Sunday at 11 a.m. (CT).
The maroon and white played from behind following the doubles point for the first time this season. A trio of tightly contested doubles matches went to a tie-breaker to determine the day's first point. Senior Jackson Withrow and sophomore Arthur Rinderknech fell 7-6(4) to No. 12 Mackenzie McDonald and Martin Redlicki followed by Harrison Adams and Shane Vinsant dropping a 7-4 tie-breaker to Gage Brymer and Austin Rapp. Junior Max Lunkin and sophomore Jordi Arconada were leading 6-4 in the tie-breaker over Maxime Cressy and Karue Sell when play was halted.
Despite the early deficit the Aggies stormed back into the match taking a 2-1 lead after the first two singles matches finished. Withrow avenged the doubles set-back with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Logan Staggs on court five. A&M took the lead as Lunkin topped Joseph Di Giulio 6-1, 6-4 on court six.
UCLA evened the ledger at 2-2 as No. 37 Redlicki tripped up Arconada 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 on court three. The Bruins pushed the Aggies to the brink of defeat after sophomore AJ Catanzariti forced a second-set tie-breaker, but fell 6-4, 7-6(3) on court four to Sell. On the match's first court, No. 8 Rinderknech played a back-and-forth match with McDonald, winning the first set 6-4 and nearly claiming the point after bouncing back from a 4-0 deficit in the second set before falling 7-3 in the tie-breaker.
The Bruins clinched the upset with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 victory on court two by No. 80 Brymer over No. 39 Vinsant. The Aggies will take on Ohio State after the Buckeyes fell 4-2 to No. 7 North Carolina Saturday morning. The match will be the first of the week between the two top-10 teams, the maroon and white will travel to Columbus to take on the scarlet and grey Friday evening.

On the match…
"It started with a highly-contested doubles point, it's not often that you see all three doubles matches go into a tie-breaker. Those could have gone either way, but they were able to win that point and it turned out that was a crucial point today. With how decisively we won at five and six, if we had taken that doubles point and put a lot of scoreboard pressure on them up 3-0 with four matches still on the court. That could have made the difference. After the doubles I thought the key was a couple tie-breakers in singles matches that also did not go our way, with Arthur and AJ in tie-breakers in the second-set. Losing tie-breakers in the doubles and in those two singles matches was the real difference today."
On tomorrow's match with Ohio State…
"Ohio State competes really hard, they are a really good team. We will have to rise up and play well if we want to walk out here with another win. It will be a hotly contested match between two top-10 teams."
