Szeryk Captures First Career Tournament Win At Florida State Match-Up
Feb 14, 2016 | Women's Golf
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- Texas A&M sophomore Maddie Szeryk picked up her first career tournament win, by capturing medalist honors at the Florida State Match-Up with a 211 (-5), finishing off the tournament with six birdies and a 70 (-2) on Sunday. Her win gives Texas A&M back-to-back individual champions in this event.
"She played so steady all day," said Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs. "She's been in this position before, and learned how to handle the situation a little better each time."
Szeryk, who had finished top 5 in eight of her 16 career tournaments leading up to the Florida State Match-Up, had never found herself in the winner's circle until Sunday. The 2015 SEC Freshman of the Year had finished second twice, including at the 2015 SEC Championship. She finished four strokes ahead of Florida State's Kim Metraux and South Carolina's Katelyn Dambaugh.
The victory marks the second straight year that an A&M golfer has won the Florida State Match-Up, after Bianca Fabrizio won in a playoff in 2015. This is only the second time the Aggies have produced back-to-back medalists in the same event, joining Isabelle Rosenberg and Anna Jonsson who won the 1998 and 1999 "Mo"Morial. This marks the first time individuals from A&M have won the same tournament in back-to-back years away from Aggieland.
This is the fifth time in her career that Szeryk has finished a 54-hole tournament at 5-under or better, the only A&M golfer to accomplish that feat. It is the second-lowest tournament score in the Florida State Match-Up's history.
As a team, Texas A&M finished fifth with a score of 898 (+34). The Aggies have finished 5th-or-better in 15 of their last 17 tournaments, dating back to 2014-15. Hosts Florida State won the tournament with an 871 (+7).
Thanya Pattamakijsakul had three birdies en route to a final round 74 (+2), finishing the tournament at 225 (+9) in a tie for 23rd. She has posted a top 25 finish in three of her five tournaments this season.
Andrea Jonama finished T-36th with a 229 (+13) after a final round 79. Bianca Fabrizio was tied for 46th at 234 (+18), shooting a 78 on Sunday, and Callie Scheffler was 63rd with a 239 (+23) with a final round 79.
Competing as an individual, Emily Campbell finished 45th with a 233 (+17), and shot a 78 on Sunday.
In the unique match-up portion of the event, which combines the efforts of two schools paired together, the Texas A&M and Florida State pairing won the event for the second straight year.
The Aggies return to action on Mar. 11-13 at the Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. For the 3M Augusta Invitational. This season, Texas A&M and Traditions Club hosts the NCAA Bryan Regional on May 5-7.
