A&M Easily Defeats SFA, 7-0
Feb 20, 2016 | Women's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 15 Texas A&M won its third consecutive match and remained undefeated at home as the Aggies raced to a 7-0 victory against injury-ridden Stephen F. Austin today at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Aggies improved to 7-3 overall, including 5-0 in home matches, while SFA, which had only four healthy players who were able to compete, falls to 6-4.
"It was kind of a tricky match," A&M first-year head coach Mark Weaver said. "I don't know that I've ever coached in a match where a team had only two doubles teams and four singles players, so to our girls' credit it would have been of easy to let the guard down. It was kind of an awkward feeling with not all six matches being played, but I thought the girls focused in well and they came with lots of energy. We spoke before the match about coming out very business-like. We knew they were injured and banged up, and I felt like our girls did a good job of coming out focused and taking care of business. There was no doubt we had the edge talent-wise, and the good news is we came out sharp and focused like we talked about before the match."
Doubles began with the Ladyjacks forced to forfeit at the No. 3 line. A&M's Rutuja Bhosale and Anna Mamalat then quickly clinched the doubles point with a win at Court 1. The Aggie duo dropped its first game against Denise Maxl and Dhanielly Quevado before reeling off six consecutive games to close out the match.
No. 2 doubles was on serve with SFA's Vanesa Calvo Pardo and Valeria Terentyeva holding a 3-2 lead over A&M's Ines Deheza and Domenica Gonzalez when the doubles point was clinched.
With SFA unable to field players at Nos. 5 and 6 singles and having to forfeit those matches, A&M began singles with a 3-0 lead. Deheza then clinched the victory for the Aggies, thumping Liza Aginskaya, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 4 line to put A&M up, 4-0.
Bhosale put A&M ahead 5-0, opening her match by winning her first seven games en route to a 6-0, 6-3 victory against Terentyeva at the No. 2 line.
Gonzalez, A&M's lone freshman, ran her win streak to four, disposing of Calvo Pardo, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles to give A&M a 6-0 lead. Pierson then capped the shutout with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Maxl at the No. 1 line.
The Aggies conclude their four-match homestand and also wrap up non-conference play as they play host to No. 30 Baylor, Wednesday, Feb. 24. First serve against the Bears is at 4 p.m. at the Mitchell Tennis Center. The Aggies defeated their former Big 12 foe, 4-0, at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis on January 27.
