No. 9 Texas A&M Falls to No. 7 UVA, 4-1
Feb 05, 2016 | Women's Tennis
MADISON, Wisconsin – No. 9 Texas A&M suffered its second consecutive loss to a top-10 opponent, falling, 4-1, to seventh-ranked Virginia today in the first round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
The Cavaliers (4-1) got a come-from-behind win in the doubles to take a 1-0 lead. After A&M's Saska Gavrilovska and Domenica Gonzalez won two games to close out a 6-4 victory over Victoria Olivarez and Taylor Wingo at the No. 3 line, the Cavaliers' 19th-ranked duo of Danielle Collins and Meghan Kelley pulled away for a 6-3 victory at the No. 1 line.
A&M's Rutuja Bhosale and Anna Mamalat had built a 5-2 lead over Julia Elbaba and Stephanie Nauta at No. 2 and maintained a 5-4 lead when the No. 1 court finished, forcing the first point to come down to the last doubles match standing. Elbaba and Nauta won their won fourth consecutive game to go up 6-5 but A&M broke the streak to knot the score at 6-6 and force a tiebreaker. Virginia went on to win the tiebreaker, 7-5, to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
The Cavaliers would win four of six first sets in singles play. Elbaba, ranked No. 8 in singles, put UVA up 2-0 after defeating former teammate Pierson, who transferred from UVA to Texas A&M after her freshman year, 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 2 line.
Paalma put the Aggies on the scoreboard and improved to 4-0 in dual matches with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Olivarez at the No. 4 line. It would be the only point the Aggies would muster. The Cavaliers then took a 3-1 lead as 30th-ranked Nauta closed out a 6-4, 6-1 win against Bhosale at No. 3 singles.
Kelley closed out the match for the Cavaliers, coming back from a 4-1 first-set deficit against Gonzalez at No. 5 to win 7-5, 6-2 to clinch the winning point for Virginia.
The remaining two matches were stopped once the overall team winner was determined. Gavrilovska, ranked 53rd, had won her first set, 6-1, over fourth-ranked Collins at the No. 1 line and built a 4-1 lead in the second set before Collins rallied. The Cavalier won six of the next seven games to win the second set, 7-5, and held a 1-0 lead in the third set when play was stopped.
Virginia's Erica Susi had won her first set, 7-6 (4) over A&M's Ines Deheza at the No. 6 line and Deheza was up in the second set, 3-1, before Virginia clinched the team victory.
A&M (3-2) moves to the consolation bracket and will face host Wisconsin on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The Badgers suffered a 4-0 loss to sixth-ranked California earlier in the day.
