COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The No. 9 Texas A&M men's tennis team swept a doubleheader Sunday afternoon defeating the No. 43 Alabama Crimson Tide, 6-1 and the No. 38 Rice Owls, 4-0. The wins completed a perfect four-win weekend at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center for the maroon and white.
In the morning session with the No. 43 Crimson Tide, the Aggies dropped the doubles point but stormed back to sweep all six singles points.
The day began when Bama took the doubles matchups 2-1 defeating the Arconada/Catanzariti and Lunkin/Vansant lines. It was Jordi Arconada who gave the Aggies their decisive fourth point. Despite falling in the first set, the sophomore only dropped four games the rest of the way for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory, giving him a 4-1 record in SEC play on the season.
After the Aggies had clinched the matchup, Jackson Withrow was victorious in nail-bitter three set match on court five. ""The conditions were really tough today with the wind. I thought our guys, especially after losing the doubles point to Alabama really stepped up in the singles. They fought hard against a really talented team. I thought we were mentally tough and handled the conditions really well. Tonight against Rice, obviously all these SEC teams are really good so this was a tough win. I knew this team was certainly capable if we did not play well but our guys played well. Tonight's match they had their chance to win the doubles point but we were able to turn it around at number one doubles which gave us some cushion. I was really pleased with some of our guys. Max Lunkin is playing at a really high level right now. We got Aleksandre Bakshi out there to be able to play tonight in a match and he won comfortably. Shane Vinsant I thought played really well here at number one. He has been playing lights out the last few matches. He played a really talented player against Alabama today, very tricky left handed player that plays with two hands on both sides. Shane handled that really well and I was happy with the way he ended that match and he was able to carry that forward tonight in the number one spot and played pretty inspiring tennis."
