Men’s Golf Set to Tee Off at SEC Championship
Apr 14, 2016 | Men's Golf
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The postseason begins for the Aggie men's golf team this weekend as Texas A&M sets its sights on a conference title at the 2016 SEC Championship which will be held at Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course.
"This time of year is always exciting," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "This is what we've worked all year for. The SEC is such a great conference and in this league the competition is so deep and talented you've got to play your best to compete."
Sea Island Golf Club, which will host the SEC Championship for the 16th year, has been named the No. 4 golf resort in the United States and hosted multiple USGA events in addition to the PGA Tour's McGladrey Classic. The par-70, 7,055-yard Seaside Course was named one of the top 100 courses in the U.S. by Golf Digest and has been the site of the SEC Championship and since 2010 after also seeing a conference champion crowned on it from 2001-07.
The strength of the conference will be on display at the event as 10 of the 14 schools (No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Vanderbilt, No. 5 LSU, No. 6 Florida, No. 9 Alabama, No. 12 South Carolina, No. 13 Auburn, No. 23 Arkansas, No. 28 Texas A&M and No. 35 Kentucky) competing in the event appear in the top 40 of the April 11 edition of the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings.
"We've had a really nice spring and our guys have been playing well," Higgins added. "We've had some really strong finishes against some great competition. We know that if we're playing our best we can compete with anybody. The weather is going to present some challenges and the course is probably going to play tougher than it has the last few years with a lot of wind and rain. Mentally we're going to have to be really focused and prepared."
Texas A&M will begin teeing off its opening round at the championship Friday morning at 9:10 a.m. (CT) and will be paired alongside golfers from Arkansas and Florida.
Representing the Aggies at the event will be seniors Adrià Arnaus, Ben Crancer and Andrew Lister along with sophomore Cameron Champ and freshman Chandler Phillips.
"The seniors have been through a lot in their careers and have given us so much," Higgins said. "They've definitely been leaders for this team, but on the course the two young guys, Cameron and Chandler, have been really strong this spring. I know they're both excited for their first SEC Championship."
