Dual meet showdown on Saturday between Texas A&M and UCLA
Apr 15, 2016 | Track and Field
Westwood, California – UCLA hosts nationally ranked Texas A&M in a dual meet at Drake Stadium on Saturday with both schools ranked among the top 10 among dual meet rankings updated this week by Track & Field News.
The Aggie men hold the No. 1 position in dual meet rankings while the A&M women are ranked No. 2. Both Aggie squads finished the indoor season with No. 1 rankings. UCLA women are currently ranked No. 3 with the Bruin men No. 7.
The traditional dual scoring format of 5-3-1-0 points for individual events and 5-0 for relay events will be used, meaning a team could sweep an individual event and claim all nine points on offer. A total of 17 events per gender will be contested. Events not held include the steeplechase, 5,000m and 10,000m.
"The value that I see for our team is that our athletes begin to understand their value to the team," noted Texas A&M head coach Pat Henry. "We know three people can score in each individual event at this meet and there will probably be six people in each event, maybe more. We are using the old-time scoring system, the way we used to score dual meets. This will be interesting to see what happens.
"I'm looking forward to it. UCLA is a program that has a long, long tradition of having great track and field teams. For us to go out there and compete against them is going to be fun for our athletes."
Field events take center stage in the dual meet from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. PT while running events begin at 3 p.m. and wrap up at 5 p.m. PT.
A balanced pair of Aggie teams will have A&M favored to sweep the dual meet team titles. Leading the women's side are a pair of two-time defending NCAA champions in Shamier Little, 400m hurdles, and Shelbi Vaughan, discus, along with current collegiate leader in the javelin, Maggie Malone. All three have career best marks which established Aggie school records and rank among the top five on the all-time collegiate list.
The A&M men are led by Fred Kerley, who is the current collegiate leader at 400m (45.10) and runs second leg on the collegiate leading 4x100 relay (39.02). Aggies also ranked in the top three among collegians include Robert Grant, third in the 400m hurdles (49.73), Audie Wyatt, second in the pole vault with his school record 18-6 ½ clearance during the Texas Relays, and Devin Jenkins, second in the 200m with a 20.39 and he anchors the Aggie 4x100 relay.
There are 10 events where it appears the majority of points can go either way between UCLA and Texas A&M. On the men's side those events include 1500m, high jump, long jump, and discus. Events on the women's side include 800m, 1500m, high jump, pole vault, triple jump and hammer.
Late night distance racing at the Mt. SAC Relays on Thursday included a trio of Aggies setting career best times in the 3,000m steeplechase. Elliott Farris led the way with a 9:02.71 clocking that places him No. 9 on the A&M all-time list. Ryan Teel moved to No. 13 on the Aggie all-time list with a 9:08.21 while Colin Stoeber set a PR of 9:16.73.
Christian Farris ran his debut race at the 10,000m distance and posted a time of 29:58.70, which is No. 7 on the A&M all-time list.
