No. 16 Texas A&M tops Sam Houston State, 18-4
Apr 20, 2016 | Softball
"I was pleased with how we played today," head coach Jo Evans said. "We picked up where we left off against Alabama. It is nice to follow that up with another big win. I thought we hit throughout our lineup. Kaitlyn Alderink, Cali Lanphear and April Ryan had multi-hit games, and Reagan Boenker came off the bench and gave us a home run. I was really pleased with our pitching too. We needed to establish ourselves on the mound and we did."
A&M took a 1-0 in the first as junior April Ryan recorded a two-out single to left center, scoring sophomore Tori Vidales. Sam Houston State evened the game in the second on a Codi Carpenter RBI single, before the Aggies scored two in the second and nine in the third.
In the second, freshman Kaitlyn Alderink belted a two-run homer, her third dinger of the season, to give the Aggies a 3-1 lead. Ryan led off the third with a single to right and later scored on a senior Cali Lanphear double. Freshman Riley Sartain plated Lanphear on a single to right, before freshman Keeli Milligan loaded the bases on an infield single.
Alderink singled to right and later moved to third on a throwing error, clearing the bases. Vidales reached on a fielding error, which allowed Alderink to score before a sophomore Ashley Walters walk. Ryan doubled in her second at bat of the inning, driving in Vidales, prior to Lanphear scoring sophomore Erica Russell, who pinch ran for Walters, on a fielder's choice.
Junior Reagan Boenker led off the fourth inning with a home run to center. After senior Breanna Dozier was hit by a pitch and sophomore Kayla Ober drew a walk, Vidales doubled, scoring Dozier. Ryan capped off her 4-for-4 day with her third RBI on an infield single. Lanphear then hit a three-run homer to finish 2-for-3 on the day with five RBI.
Freshman Samantha Show earned her 20th victory of the season, tossing three innings giving up two hits with a strikeout.
The Aggies return to action Saturday-Monday at No. 19 Missouri. Saturday's game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. on ESPNU, while Sunday and Monday's games are slated for a 6 p.m. start on the SEC Network. All three games can be heard locally on KWBC 1550 AM or online at www.RadioAggieland.com.
