Texas A&M Advances with 4-0 Victory over Denver
May 13, 2016 | Women's Tennis
STANFORD, Calif. – No. 19 Texas A&M has advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship for a fifth consecutive year after blanking 48th-ranked Denver, 4-0, in first-round action today at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
The Aggies (17-10) will take on 15th-ranked Stanford (15-5) in the second round on Saturday at noon (2 p.m. CT) also at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Cardinal advanced by defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-0.
"It was a very good day for the Aggies," Texas A&M first-year head coach Mark Weaver said. "We took care of business in the doubles and played very sharp in the singles. Going into the match, I felt that if we secured the doubles point we would be in very good shape today. The first round of the NCAAs can be a bit tricky with handling the nerves and also having not played a match for three weeks.
"The girls are excited and looking forward to Stanford tomorrow, and if we can continue to play at a high level tomorrow as we have been playing for the last 5-6 weeks, I am optimistic about our chances."
Texas A&M, making its 17th consecutive and 22nd overall appearance in the NCAA Championship, won two of three doubles matches to take the early 1-0 lead over the Pioneers. The Aggies' 75th-ranked Rutuja Bhosale and Anna Mamalat extended their win streak to eight matches and were first off the courts after disposing of Morgan Barnhill and Bianca Mok, 6-2 at the No. 2 line.
The Pioneers then got their only win on the day as Julia O'Loughlin and Maureen Slattery pulled away for a 6-2 victory over Rachel Pierson and Eva Paalma at No. 1.
Ines Deheza and Saska Gavrilovska clinched the point for the Aggies. After jumping out to a 4-1 lead, the Aggie duo finished off Charlotte Derbyshire and Gracia Mboko, 6-3, to conclude the doubles portion of the competition.
As she did in doubles, Deheza got a convincing victory in singles, defeating Derbyshire, 6-2 in the opening set and then winning four consecutive games to close out a 6-1 second-set victory at No. 4 to put Texas A&M ahead, 2-0. It was the team-leading 20th win for Deheza as she improved to 20-8 overall.
Bhosale gave the Aggies a 3-0 lead and extended her win streak to five with a straight-set win at the No. 2 line. Listed No. 69 in the ITA national singles rankings, Bhosale jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Maureen Slattery and went on to win, 6-1, 6-3, to join Deheza in the 20-win club.
Domenica Gonzalez capped the victory for the Aggies and became the third Texas A&M player to reach the 20-win milestone with a straight-set victory over Evy Van Genechten at No. 5. After getting broken in the opening game, Gonzalez reeled off sixth straight games to win the first set 6-1. Gonzalez went on to win a total of nine consecutive games while jumping out to a 3-0 second-set lead. Van Genechten got within 3-2 and 4-3 before Gonzalez won the next two games to close out the 6-1, 6-3 victory and send the Aggies on to the second round.
Play was stopped on the remaining three courts once the match was clinched. O'Loughlin held off Gavrilovska, 9-7, in a tiebreaker to win the first set, 7-6, at No. 1, and the second set was tied at 1-1 when the match was abandoned.
Pierson and Mok split sets at No. 3 with Pierson jumping out to a 5-0 lead en route to a 6-1 first-set win. Mok then fought back to take the second set, 6-4, to even the match when play was stopped.
Mamalat, who was inserted into the singles lineup at No. 6 singles for Paalma following doubles, dropped her opening set, 6-3, to Barnhill but rallied to take the second set, 6-2, to even the match when the contest was halted.
The Pioneers, who entered the match riding a 14-match win streak, end their season 21-3.
The Aggies' second-round match against Stanford will mark the first time the two teams have met since the Cardinal held off Texas A&M, 4-3, in the 2013 national championship match. Deheza and Mamalat were both freshman and played key roles on the Aggies' most successful team in program history, with Deheza getting a clutch last-match-standing victory against UCLA to springboard the Aggies into the championship match and Mamalat posting a straight-set victory at No. 5 in the match against the Cardinal.
